OrganicFarming – Centre Unveils Major Support Package to Strengthen Sikkim’s Green Economy
OrganicFarming – The Central government has announced significant financial assistance for Sikkim, reinforcing its commitment to supporting environmentally responsible growth and sustainable economic development in the Himalayan state. The Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) described Sikkim as a leading example of ecological balance, organic agriculture and responsible tourism in India.

New Push for Organic Agriculture
Speaking about the latest initiatives, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted Sikkim’s achievements in environmental conservation and sustainable farming practices. He said the state has established itself as a benchmark for green development through its strong focus on organic cultivation and nature-based economic activities.
During his recent visit to Gangtok to participate in the celebrations marking Sikkim’s 51st Statehood Day, the minister formally launched the “Mission Sikkim Organics” programme. The initiative has been designed to strengthen the state’s organic farming sector and improve its integration with national and international markets.
Rs 360 Crore Mission to Benefit Farmers
The newly launched mission carries an estimated investment of Rs 360 crore and is expected to support more than 66,000 farming households across Sikkim. The programme aims to build a stronger organic value chain while enhancing opportunities for farmers through better market access and improved infrastructure.
According to official details, MDoNER will provide Rs 85 crore for critical components such as infrastructure development, coordination mechanisms and agricultural aggregation systems. Additional funding and support will be mobilised through collaboration with various Central government departments, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and private investors.
Development Projects Across the State
Alongside the organic farming initiative, the Centre also announced progress on a series of development projects aimed at improving public infrastructure and connectivity. During the Statehood Day programme, foundation stones were laid and completed works were inaugurated for 21 projects with a combined value of Rs 223 crore.
These projects include road networks, bridge construction, tourism-related facilities and connectivity improvements intended to enhance transportation and create new economic opportunities for local communities. Officials believe the investments will contribute to long-term regional development while maintaining the state’s environmental priorities.
Focus on Education, Tourism and Heritage
Several ongoing projects were reviewed during the minister’s visit. These included development activities at Temi Tea Estate in Namchi, construction work at the upcoming Khangchendzonga State University campus in Tarku and the Bhaleydunga Skywalk project being developed under the PM-DevINE scheme.
The minister noted that these initiatives represent Sikkim’s approach to balancing economic progress with environmental responsibility. He said the projects are expected to strengthen tourism, education and local livelihoods while preserving the state’s natural character.
Recognition for Conservation Efforts
During his visit, Scindia also toured the Orchidarium at Saramsa, where he reviewed biodiversity conservation efforts. He later interacted with residents and visitors at MG Marg in Gangtok, gaining first-hand insight into local aspirations and community initiatives.
Praising the state’s achievements, he said Sikkim continues to stand out for its commitment to environmental protection, cultural preservation and organic agriculture. According to the minister, the state’s development model offers valuable lessons for other regions seeking sustainable growth while safeguarding natural resources.
