Municipal Politics – BJP Strengthens Position in Delhi Civic Body After AAP Councillor Joins Party

Municipal Politics –The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has further expanded its presence in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Vikas Taank switched allegiance during the ward committee elections held on Wednesday. His decision has increased the BJP’s strength in the civic body’s House to 140 members.

Councillor Announces Shift to BJP

Vikas Taank, who represents the Civil Lines ward and serves as the chairman of the City-Sadar Paharganj Zone, formally joined the BJP at an event attended by Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, Chandni Chowk Member of Parliament Praveen Khandelwal, and the party’s media department head Praveen Shankar Kapoor. Taank is also recognised as a youth leader from the Valmiki community.

Speaking after joining the party, Taank expressed happiness over becoming a member of the BJP and said he looked forward to contributing through its platform. His move comes at a significant time as the MCD conducts ward committee elections, an important process in the functioning of the city’s municipal administration.

BJP Highlights Growing Support

Welcoming the new entrant, Harsh Malhotra said the BJP has continued to attract elected representatives from opposition parties. According to him, several councillors have chosen to join the BJP after being influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the development-focused initiatives undertaken since the BJP formed the government in Delhi under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The party leadership described Taank’s induction as another indication of increasing confidence among public representatives in the BJP’s governance approach. Leaders present at the event also expressed optimism that his experience in municipal administration would strengthen the party’s organisational efforts within the civic body.

BJP’s Position in the Municipal Corporation

The latest political development has further improved the BJP’s numbers in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Although the party secured only 104 seats in the December 2022 MCD elections and remained behind the Aam Aadmi Party at that time, its strength has steadily grown through subsequent political changes and defections.

With Vikas Taank joining its ranks, the BJP now has 140 councillors in the 250-member municipal House. The increase reflects a notable shift in the political balance within the corporation over the past few years.

Impact on Civic Politics

The change in party affiliation is expected to have implications for future decision-making and administrative functioning within the MCD. Ward committee elections play an important role in determining local governance responsibilities, making changes in political numbers particularly significant.

While the BJP views the development as evidence of expanding support among elected representatives, the move also highlights the evolving political landscape in Delhi’s municipal administration. Observers will closely watch whether similar developments continue to influence the composition of the civic body in the coming months.
