Monsoon – Delhi Receives Southwest Monsoon After Five-Day Delay

Delhi southwest monsoon arrives after five day delay

Monsoon Enters Delhi in July After Four Years

According to the India Meteorological Department, this is the first time since 2021 that the southwest monsoon has entered Delhi in July. The previous July arrival was recorded on July 13, 2021.

The monsoon generally reaches Delhi by June 27, although the actual arrival date can vary depending on weather patterns over north India and surrounding regions. This year’s onset came after a short delay, but rainfall activity was reported across multiple parts of the city soon after the monsoon advanced.

Rainfall Reported Across Several Areas

Residents in different parts of Delhi witnessed rain and overcast skies on Thursday as the monsoon made its presence felt. The showers helped lower temperatures in some locations and brought a temporary break from the intense heat and moisture that had persisted before the arrival of the seasonal rains.

Rainfall during the monsoon period is important for the city’s water supply, green cover and air quality. However, heavy spells can also lead to waterlogging, traffic congestion and delays in daily commuting, particularly in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

Delhi Monsoon Arrival Dates in Recent Years

The monsoon has reached Delhi on different dates over the past five years. In 2025, it arrived on June 29, while the onset was recorded on June 28 in 2024. Delhi received the monsoon on June 25 in 2023 and on June 30 in 2022.

These changing arrival dates reflect the natural variation in the progress of the southwest monsoon. Weather experts regularly track rainfall systems, wind movement and moisture conditions to assess the advance of monsoon clouds across different parts of the country.

IMD Predicts Rain and Thunderstorms During the Day

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms with rain in many parts of Delhi during the day. Cloudy conditions are also expected to remain over the city, indicating continued monsoon activity.

People travelling for work, school or other commitments may need to plan for wet roads and possible traffic disruptions. Authorities are also likely to monitor vulnerable areas where intense rainfall can affect drainage systems and local movement.

Seasonal Rainfall Expected to Continue

With the southwest monsoon now active over Delhi, the city may continue to receive intermittent rain in the coming days. The intensity and distribution of rainfall may differ from one locality to another, depending on the movement of rain-bearing clouds.

The arrival of the monsoon marks the beginning of a key weather phase for Delhi, with residents expected to experience cooler conditions at times along with periods of rain, thunderstorms and cloudy skies.
