Missing Persons – The Gujarat Police have successfully located and reunited 1,470 missing individuals with their families through a month-long statewide initiative known as Operation Milap. The campaign was launched with the objective of resolving pending missing persons cases and reinforcing public trust in law enforcement agencies across the state.
Statewide Review of Missing Persons Cases
The special operation began on May 7 and involved a detailed examination of unresolved missing persons reports from various districts. Official records indicate that Gujarat has registered 24,767 missing persons cases since 2007. The focused drive aimed to accelerate investigations and identify fresh leads in long-standing cases.
According to officials, Operation Milap was designed to ensure timely intervention in missing persons matters while strengthening community confidence in policing. The initiative formed part of a broader effort to improve public safety and support vulnerable sections of society.
Citizen-Focused Policing Strategy
The campaign was carried out under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, whose administration has emphasized people-centered policing. Authorities have prioritized areas such as women’s safety, child protection, action against narcotics networks, detection of illegal immigration, and issues linked to national security.
Director General of Police GS Malik stated that although the special operation has formally concluded, investigations into missing persons cases will continue. Police personnel across Gujarat have been directed to pursue such cases alongside their regular responsibilities to ensure that unresolved reports remain under active review.
Technology and Field Investigations Combined
Officials said the success of the operation was driven by a combination of technological tools and traditional investigative methods. Teams reviewed historical records, analyzed digital data, monitored social media activity, and conducted searches at transportation hubs and shelter facilities.
Additional Director General of Police Ajay Choudhary explained that officers also revisited complainants, witnesses, and family members to gather updated information. These efforts helped generate new leads in several cases that had remained unresolved for years.
Women and Children Among Key Focus Areas
The operation highlighted significant patterns in missing persons cases across Gujarat. Investigators found that adolescent girls represented one of the most vulnerable categories among those reported missing.
Police teams successfully traced numerous women and children, including individuals whose cases had remained pending for extended periods. Recoveries were made not only within Gujarat but also from several other states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
Recovery Data Reveals Important Trends
Of the 1,470 people traced during the campaign, 852 were women, 342 were men, 234 were minor girls, and 42 were minor boys. Among all law enforcement units involved, Surat City Police recorded the highest number of successful recoveries, locating 341 missing individuals.
Investigators observed that romantic relationships and voluntary elopement accounted for a significant share of disappearances, particularly among girls aged between 14 and 17 years. Other contributing factors included family disagreements, academic challenges, parental conflicts, and domestic disputes.
Long-Pending Cases Reopened
Authorities also revisited older files, including cases dating back to 2007. The renewed investigations resulted in the discovery of several individuals whose whereabouts had remained unknown for many years.
Police officials credited the operation’s success to extensive fieldwork, intelligence gathering, mobile phone analysis, coordination with law enforcement agencies in other states, and counselling support for affected families. The results of Operation Milap reflect the Gujarat Police’s ongoing commitment to addressing missing persons cases and ensuring that every investigation receives sustained attention until a resolution is achieved.
