Meta – Government Presses Social Media Giant Over PM Modi Post Removal
Meta – The Central government on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with Meta’s global leadership after the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post triggered concerns over content moderation and platform governance. The discussions, led by senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), came as authorities sought detailed explanations on the incident and broader issues related to compliance with Indian laws.
Parliamentary panel seeks explanation
The meeting gained additional significance after a Parliamentary Standing Committee demanded an apology from Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg over the removal of the Prime Minister’s speech from Facebook. According to official communication sent to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the committee warned that legal protections and immunities available to the company could face review if an apology was not submitted within three days.
Government officials indicated that the issue extends beyond a single content moderation error and reflects wider concerns regarding the functioning of large digital platforms operating in India.
Senior executives meet MeitY officials
Meta’s delegation, led by Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan, met IT Secretary S. Krishnan and other senior MeitY officials in a meeting lasting about 45 minutes. The company’s representatives were also scheduled to meet Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw later in the day.
The government had summoned Meta’s global leadership after Prime Minister Modi’s Facebook post, in which he addressed young people and promised strict action against paper leaks, was briefly restricted before being restored.
Meta maintained that the removal occurred because of a technical error in its automated systems and said the content was restored after the mistake was identified. However, MeitY described the explanation as insufficient and sought greater clarity on the safeguards used by the platform.
Broader concerns over platform safety
Officials also discussed Meta’s handling of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and the effectiveness of the company’s moderation systems. The government had issued a notice to Meta last month regarding allegations involving CSAM appearing in paid advertisements on Instagram.
Speaking earlier, IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the government wanted to understand the measures taken by Meta to address such concerns, including the handling of synthetically generated content and protections for verified public figures whose posts could be mistakenly removed.
He noted that companies with advanced technological capabilities should be able to develop reliable systems capable of preventing such errors while ensuring effective enforcement against harmful content.
Questions over algorithms and compliance
Government representatives also sought clarification on the functioning of Meta’s algorithms and the possibility of algorithmic bias. Officials said the discussions covered how automated systems make moderation decisions and how the company intends to ensure compliance with Indian legal requirements.
Sources familiar with the matter said authorities view the issue as one involving public order and national security in addition to technology. As a result, Meta’s global leadership was asked to explain the safeguards built into its content moderation processes and the accountability mechanisms followed when errors occur.
Enhanced safeguards introduced
Following the incident, Meta informed the government that it had introduced additional layers of review for posts published by Prime Minister Modi and other prominent verified accounts. According to the company, these enhanced checks involve multiple stages of verification by senior officials before moderation decisions are finalised.
Meta also informed the government that the Prime Minister’s original Facebook post had been mistakenly removed by AI-powered automated content filters while reviewing shared versions of the content and related videos. Officials, however, maintained that technology-related errors should be addressed through stronger internal systems rather than accepted as unavoidable glitches.
The Centre’s decision to engage directly with Meta’s international leadership instead of relying only on its India-based representatives signals a stronger emphasis on corporate accountability and adherence to India’s digital regulations. Authorities have indicated that continued engagement with the company will focus on improving transparency, strengthening compliance mechanisms and preventing similar incidents in the future.
