Maharashtra Politics – Sanjay Dina Patil Faces Fresh Row Over Remarks to Journalists
Maharashtra Politics – A fresh controversy has emerged around Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil after he was accused of using abusive language and threatening journalists during an interaction over a political issue in Maharashtra. Patil, who recently shifted from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction to the camp headed by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, allegedly reacted angrily when reporters sought his response to a complaint filed against him. The incident has triggered criticism from opposition leaders and renewed debate over the treatment of media professionals by public representatives.

Dispute Began After Complaint to Mumbai Police
The matter gained attention after Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut submitted a letter to Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, urging authorities to take action against Patil over his reported remarks. Soon after the complaint became public, journalists approached the MP for his reaction. According to reports, the interaction quickly turned tense, with Patil allegedly losing his temper while speaking to members of the press.
Allegations of Threats During Media Interaction
Reports claim that Patil instructed journalists to switch off their cameras and warned them against approaching him for comments in the future. He allegedly challenged reporters to record his statements and present them to the Police Commissioner, while also making remarks suggesting he would physically assault them if they continued questioning him. The exchange reportedly took place in the presence of police personnel, adding further attention to the episode.
Opposition Questions Government’s Response
The alleged incident prompted criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav, who questioned the functioning of law and order in the state. He argued that such remarks by an elected representative reflected growing confidence among those holding power and claimed the ruling alliance had failed to ensure responsible conduct from its leaders. Jadhav also said that incidents involving threats against journalists raise broader concerns about democratic values and freedom of the press.
Shinde Camp Reacts to the Controversy
Amid the growing political debate, reports indicated that Sanjay Dina Patil discussed the matter with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Responding on behalf of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, minister Sanjay Shirsat stated that disrespectful language towards journalists cannot be justified in a democratic system. While suggesting that Patil may have spoken in anger, Shirsat acknowledged that the remarks should not have been made if they caused distress to media personnel.
He further said the party leadership would speak with Patil regarding the controversy and ensure that such situations are addressed appropriately. The statement appeared to distance the party from the alleged remarks while attempting to calm the political fallout surrounding the incident.
Political Debate Continues
The controversy has once again brought the relationship between political leaders and the media into focus. While opposition parties are demanding accountability, the ruling camp has indicated that the matter will be handled internally. As discussions continue, attention remains on whether any official action will follow and how political parties respond to concerns over public conduct and respect for journalists.
