LPGPrice – Parliament Disruption Sought Over Sharp Rise in Commercial Cylinders

LPGPrice –  Congress leader Manickam Tagore has formally sought an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, drawing attention to the recent increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices. He described the hike as significant enough to disrupt both public life and economic stability, urging lawmakers to prioritise discussion on the issue.

Concerns Over Sudden Price Surge

In his written appeal, Tagore highlighted that commercial LPG cylinder rates have risen by nearly 30 to 40 percent in recent weeks. He noted that the steep increase has triggered anxiety among business owners and consumers alike. According to him, supply shortages have compounded the problem, forcing restaurants and food vendors to raise prices, ultimately affecting everyday consumers.

He pointed out that the burden of rising costs is being passed down the chain, making basic food services more expensive. This, he argued, is placing additional strain on households already managing tight budgets.

Potential Impact on Businesses and Jobs

Tagore also warned of broader economic consequences if the situation is not addressed promptly. He stated that higher fuel costs for commercial establishments could lead to closures, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises. Such outcomes, he cautioned, may result in job losses and reduced income opportunities for thousands of workers.

He stressed that the price hike is not an isolated issue but one that could influence multiple sectors, especially those dependent on daily fuel consumption such as restaurants, catering services, and small manufacturing units.

Criticism of Government Response

In his appeal, the Congress leader criticised the central government for what he described as a lack of timely intervention. He urged the House to suspend regular proceedings to take up the matter urgently and discuss possible solutions.

Tagore called for immediate steps to reverse the price increase, ensure consistent LPG supply, and prevent further escalation in food prices. He emphasised that the situation requires swift and concrete policy measures to ease public distress.

Recent Price Revisions Explained

The latest revision in LPG prices came into effect on March 7. Domestic cooking gas cylinders weighing 14.2 kilograms saw an increase of Rs 60 across the country. At the same time, the price of 19-kilogram commercial LPG cylinders was raised by Rs 115.

This marks the first change in domestic LPG prices since April 2025, when the non-subsidised rate in Delhi stood at Rs 853. Following the recent hike, the price of a household cylinder in the national capital is now around Rs 913.

Opposition Voices and Public Reaction

Several opposition leaders have echoed concerns similar to those raised by Tagore. They argue that the increase will add to the financial burden on families and small businesses already dealing with rising living costs.

Critics believe that essential commodities linked to fuel prices may see further increases, potentially affecting inflation levels and household spending patterns in the coming months.

Government Perspective on Pricing

Officials, however, have defended the price adjustment by placing it in an international context. They maintain that even after the recent hike, LPG prices in India remain lower compared to several neighbouring countries.

According to available comparisons, a 14.2-kilogram LPG cylinder costs approximately Rs 913 in Delhi, while prices are higher in countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Authorities suggest that global market dynamics and import costs play a role in determining domestic prices.

Call for Immediate Discussion

With the issue now raised formally in Parliament, attention is likely to focus on how the government responds to mounting concerns. The demand for an adjournment motion reflects the urgency expressed by opposition leaders, who are pushing for a detailed debate and policy clarity.

As discussions unfold, the impact of LPG pricing on businesses, employment, and household budgets is expected to remain a key topic in the political and economic landscape.
