LawOrder – Police Detain Key Suspect in Malda Judicial Officers Gherao Case
LawOrder – The West Bengal Police have taken a significant step in the investigation into the recent unrest in Malda district by arresting two individuals, including the person believed to have played a central role in the incident involving judicial officers.

Arrest at Airport Raises Questions on Escape Attempt
According to senior police officials, one of the accused, identified as advocate Mofakkarul Islam, was apprehended at Bagdogra airport in Siliguri while reportedly preparing to board a flight. Authorities believe he may have been attempting to leave the region following the incident. Another individual, said to be associated with him, was also detained during the operation.
Officials described Islam as a key figure linked to the events that unfolded earlier this week, when seven judicial officers were surrounded and confined inside a block office for several hours. The situation occurred on Wednesday night at the Kaliachak-2 block office under the Mothabari assembly constituency.
Allegations of Instigation Through Public Speeches
Police sources stated that multiple cases have been filed against Islam at the Kaliachak police station. He has been accused of delivering speeches that allegedly incited a section of the local population, which subsequently led to the gherao of the judicial officers.
A senior officer involved in the investigation noted that these speeches were delivered at different locations on the same day as the incident. Authorities believe these gatherings contributed to escalating tensions in the area.
Coordinated Effort Leads to Arrest
The arrest operation was carried out with assistance from multiple agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Department and local police units in Siliguri. Officials said that the suspect had been under surveillance since the incident, and his movements were closely tracked before he was detained at the airport.
Law enforcement agencies have registered a total of 19 cases related to the incident so far. The police are continuing to examine the sequence of events to determine the extent of planning involved and whether additional individuals played a role.
Parallel Investigations Continue Despite NIA Involvement
Although the National Investigation Agency has taken over the case, the West Bengal Police have confirmed that they will continue their own parallel inquiry. Their focus remains on identifying whether the gherao was a spontaneous act or the result of a coordinated plan.
Officials emphasized that gathering local intelligence and understanding ground-level dynamics are crucial to establishing a complete picture of what transpired.
Number of Arrests Rises as Probe Expands
With the latest detentions, the number of people arrested in connection with the case has reached 35. Among those taken into custody is also a candidate associated with a political party, indicating the broader scope of the investigation.
Authorities have maintained that all arrests have been made based on available evidence and ongoing inquiries. Further action is expected as investigators continue to examine digital records, eyewitness accounts, and other material linked to the case.
Focus on Restoring Confidence in Judicial Safety
The incident has drawn attention to concerns around the safety and functioning of judicial officers in sensitive areas. Officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that such disruptions do not recur and that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
Security measures in the region have reportedly been strengthened following the incident, and administrative officials are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further unrest.
