KeralaPolitics – Congress Leadership Weighs Chief Minister Choice After UDF Victory

KeralaPolitics – Following the Congress-led United Democratic Front’s success in the Kerala Assembly elections, internal discussions over the next chief minister have gathered momentum, with senior leaders actively presenting their cases before the party’s central leadership.

Kerala congress cm choice race

Among the prominent contenders are senior Congress figures Ramesh Chennithala, V. D. Satheesan, and K. C. Venugopal. Party sources indicated that Chennithala travelled to New Delhi on Wednesday and met senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, ahead of the first gathering of newly elected legislators scheduled for Thursday.

Senior Leaders Present Their Arguments

According to party insiders, Chennithala used the meeting to underline his long political experience and administrative background. He is also understood to have reminded the leadership that he was not chosen as Leader of the Opposition in 2021 despite allegedly enjoying the support of many party MLAs at the time. Sources further suggested that he highlighted backing from influential community leaders as an added advantage in the current contest. Venugopal was also reportedly present during parts of the discussions with the party high command.

The Congress leadership is expected to take a final decision after receiving feedback from party observers monitoring the post-election consultations in Kerala. While no official announcement has been made, internal assessments reportedly place Venugopal in a strong position within the party structure. At the same time, Satheesan is said to enjoy wider popularity among sections of party workers and supporters across the state.

Focus on Consensus and Governance

Sources familiar with the deliberations said Venugopal stressed before the leadership that the UDF campaign was not centred around projecting a single chief ministerial face during the elections. He is believed to have argued that voters supported individual candidates based on their local influence, political standing, and constituency-level work rather than backing one specific leader for the top post.

According to those aware of the discussions, Venugopal maintained that the opinions of elected legislators should carry significant importance because they represent the political mood of their respective constituencies. He reportedly urged the leadership to adopt a broader approach while selecting the next chief minister.

High Command Balancing Multiple Factors

Party insiders said the Congress leadership is carefully evaluating several aspects before arriving at a decision. These include administrative capability, organisational management, experience in governance, and the ability to maintain unity within both the Congress party and the wider UDF alliance.

Sources added that Venugopal also cautioned against relying too heavily on media speculation surrounding individual candidates. According to him, public narratives alone should not determine leadership decisions at such a crucial stage for the alliance.

The coming days are expected to be politically significant for Kerala as Congress leaders continue internal consultations to finalise a consensus candidate capable of leading the new government. With multiple senior figures in contention and different sections of the party backing different names, the final decision is likely to shape the direction of the UDF government in the state for the next five years.
