KarnatakaPolitics – Ministerial Portfolio Concerns Surface Ahead of Cabinet Expansion

KarnatakaPolitics –  Political discussions within Karnataka’s ruling Congress have intensified as several leaders continue to express concerns regarding portfolio allocations and future positions in the government.

Karnataka ministerial portfolio concerns

Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has traveled to New Delhi amid growing speculation about his dissatisfaction with the responsibilities assigned to him in the newly formed state government. Party insiders indicate that Gowda is particularly concerned that major urban planning and development bodies, including the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA), remain under the supervision of Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Delhi Visit Focuses on Leadership Consultations

Sources familiar with the developments said Gowda is currently in the national capital along with a group of Congress legislators who are hopeful of securing ministerial positions when the state cabinet undergoes expansion. The leaders are expected to seek meetings with senior Congress decision-makers to discuss both governance-related concerns and their political aspirations.

The latest developments come shortly after Shivakumar assumed office as Chief Minister alongside a team of 13 ministers, setting the stage for further cabinet adjustments in the coming weeks.

Demand for Key Portfolios Continues

According to party sources, Gowda is interested in returning to the Revenue Department, a portfolio he handled during an earlier Congress administration led by Siddaramaiah. The department is presently overseen by Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara.

Insiders suggest that Gowda may not be inclined to continue handling Bengaluru Development affairs unless agencies such as the BDA and BMRDA are transferred to his administrative control.

Before departing for New Delhi, Gowda reportedly met Siddaramaiah at his residence. Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad also attended the meeting. Gowda is accompanied by Arshad, Srinivas Mane, and TB Jayachandra during the Delhi visit. All three legislators are understood to be seeking opportunities in the anticipated cabinet expansion.

Aspirants Intensify Efforts for Cabinet Positions

TB Jayachandra recently received an appointment as Karnataka’s Special Representative in Delhi, a role he previously held during Siddaramaiah’s earlier tenure as Chief Minister. Meanwhile, several legislators continue to lobby for ministerial responsibilities as discussions within the party gain momentum.

Another senior Congress leader, KH Muniyappa, is also reported to be dissatisfied with his current assignment in the Food and Civil Supplies Department. Sources indicate that he has once again conveyed his preference for the Social Welfare portfolio during interactions with senior party leadership.

Earlier Discontent Within Government

Portfolio allocation has been a sensitive issue since the formation of the government. Earlier, Ramalinga Reddy, who currently heads the Major and Medium Irrigation Department, had reportedly submitted his resignation while seeking the Bengaluru Development portfolio. However, he later withdrew the resignation following intervention by Chief Minister Shivakumar.

At the same time, Energy and Tourism Minister KJ George has dismissed reports suggesting dissatisfaction with his responsibilities. In a public statement, George reaffirmed his commitment to working under the Chief Minister’s leadership and emphasized that his priority remains public service and the state’s development objectives.

Cabinet Expansion Discussions Expected

Political observers expect cabinet expansion to remain a major topic during upcoming consultations between Karnataka leaders and the Congress high command in New Delhi. The exercise is likely to take place after the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections scheduled for June 18.

Chief Minister Shivakumar and Deputy Chief Minister Parameshwara are also expected to visit the national capital to hold discussions with senior Congress leaders regarding the next phase of government formation and administrative responsibilities.

Chief Minister’s Delhi Schedule

Apart from political meetings, Shivakumar is scheduled to participate in the 11th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog during his two-day visit to New Delhi. He is expected to interact with several senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, while also visiting offices of various party-affiliated organizations.

The Chief Minister’s itinerary includes meetings with officials and administrative representatives at Karnataka Bhavan. His participation in the NITI Aayog gathering is expected to focus on development priorities and coordination between the state and central institutions.
