Intelligence Bureau –  The Government of India has named senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau, marking a significant leadership transition in the country’s internal security framework.

Mahesh Dixit Named as New Intelligence Bureau Director

The Central Government has appointed senior Indian Police Service officer Mahesh Dixit as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), replacing Tapan Kumar Deka, who completed four years at the helm of the country’s premier internal intelligence agency. The decision received approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dixit will serve a two-year term from the date he assumes office or until further orders, as specified by the government.

Experienced Officer Takes Charge

Mahesh Dixit belongs to the 1993 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre and is currently serving as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. Throughout his career, he has held several key intelligence assignments and is widely regarded for his extensive operational experience in sensitive regions. His appointment comes at a time when intelligence coordination continues to play a vital role in maintaining national security.

According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Dixit’s appointment includes an extension in service under the relevant provisions of service rules, as he was originally scheduled to retire in August 2027.

Leadership Change at the Intelligence Bureau

The Intelligence Bureau functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is India’s principal agency responsible for internal intelligence gathering and counter-intelligence operations. It plays a central role in identifying security threats, supporting counter-terrorism efforts, and coordinating intelligence inputs across the country.

Outgoing Director Tapan Kumar Deka was appointed to the position in 2022 for a fixed two-year tenure. His term was subsequently extended twice, allowing him to continue in office until June 2026. Officials familiar with the appointment process indicated that extending Deka’s tenure was initially considered. However, after completing four years in the position, he reportedly expressed his preference not to continue further.

Extensive Background in Security Operations

Before being selected as the IB chief, Mahesh Dixit built a long career across several challenging assignments. A qualified medical doctor before joining the Indian Police Service, he has served in states including Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, and Bihar.

His association with Jammu and Kashmir has been particularly significant. Between 2009 and 2012, he worked as Deputy Director of the Intelligence Bureau in the region. He later served in Nagaland from 2012 to 2015 before returning to Jammu and Kashmir in 2020 as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau.

During his tenure there until 2024, Dixit supervised intelligence coordination and security planning following the constitutional changes related to the former state after the revocation of Article 370. His experience in managing intelligence operations during a sensitive security period is considered one of the defining aspects of his professional career.

With Mahesh Dixit assuming leadership of the Intelligence Bureau, the government is expected to maintain continuity in intelligence operations while strengthening internal security mechanisms. His decades of experience in intelligence gathering, regional security management, and strategic coordination are expected to support the agency’s ongoing responsibilities in addressing evolving security challenges across the country.
