Infrastructure – South Delhi Set for Major Traffic Relief Through New Flyover Plan

Infrastructure –  The Delhi government has cleared a major infrastructure project aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion in South Delhi. Authorities have approved the construction of a nearly four-kilometre-long flyover along SSN Marg in the Chhatarpur area, a move expected to improve traffic flow and reduce travel delays for thousands of daily commuters.

Project Cleared After Feasibility Assessment

According to Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, the proposal has received official approval following preliminary studies conducted by the department. The PWD had initiated a feasibility assessment last year to evaluate the viability of building an elevated corridor on the busy stretch.

Officials said the next stage will involve issuing a tender to appoint a construction agency for the project. Once the contractor selection process is completed, work on the proposed infrastructure upgrade is expected to move forward.

Heavy Congestion Drives Need for Intervention

The road section has long been identified as one of the most crowded corridors in the area. Traffic pressure remains high throughout the day due to the presence of slow-moving vehicles, frequent cross-traffic movements, and significant pedestrian activity.

The surrounding region includes numerous farmhouses, commercial establishments, and religious sites that attract a steady flow of visitors. As a result, vehicle queues often build up during both peak and non-peak hours, creating delays for motorists and public transport users alike.

Integrated Corridor Planned for Better Connectivity

The proposed flyover is part of a broader traffic management strategy designed to improve movement across the Chhatarpur zone. Officials said the project will not be limited to an elevated roadway alone.

The larger plan includes the development of an integrated transit corridor featuring additional supporting infrastructure. These measures are expected to include slip roads for smoother traffic dispersal and dedicated facilities for pedestrians.

Authorities are also considering either an underpass or a foot overbridge to enable safer pedestrian crossings. The objective is to separate vehicle and pedestrian movement wherever possible, thereby reducing bottlenecks and improving road safety.

Busy Route Faces Growing Traffic Pressure

The Chhatarpur stretch has witnessed increasing traffic volumes over the years as commercial activity and urban development expanded across South Delhi. The corridor experiences continuous movement of buses, private cars, auto-rickshaws, motorcycles, and pedestrians, making traffic management particularly challenging.

Even outside rush hours, commuters frequently encounter slow-moving traffic on the route. Urban planners believe that the planned infrastructure upgrades could significantly reduce travel time and improve overall connectivity in the area.

Existing Junctions Contribute to Delays

Traffic officials have identified signalized intersections as one of the contributing factors behind recurring congestion. At present, three traffic signals are located along Anuvrat Marg, around 200 metres ahead of the Chhatarpur Mandir intersection.

The concentration of traffic signals, combined with heavy vehicle movement and pedestrian crossings, often leads to traffic buildup. The proposed flyover and supporting road network are expected to help streamline movement through these critical junctions and provide long-term relief to commuters using the corridor.
