Infrastructure – Historic Bara Shaheed Dargah Festival Draws Devotees From Across the Country
Infrastructure – Thousands of devotees gathered at the historic Bara Shaheed Dargah in Nellore as the annual Rottela Panduga entered its third day, with people from several Indian states taking part in the long-standing tradition of exchanging symbolic “wish rotis.” The event witnessed a steady flow of pilgrims from the early hours, reflecting the festival’s enduring spiritual significance and cultural appeal.

Pilgrims Arrive From Several States
Visitors travelled from Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and several other regions to participate in the celebrations. Large crowds were seen around the dargah throughout the day, with queues extending beyond the main entrance. Swarnala Cheruvu, where the traditional exchange of rotis takes place, remained crowded as all nine ghats accommodated a continuous stream of devotees.
Symbolic Rotis Reflect Personal Aspirations
The festival is widely known for its unique custom of exchanging rotis associated with personal wishes and life goals. Among the most popular offerings this year were Job Roti, Marriage Roti, and Santana Roti, representing prayers for employment, marriage, and parenthood respectively. Many devotees believe that participating in this ritual strengthens their faith while expressing their hopes for a better future.
Authorities Receive Appreciation for Crowd Management
Despite the heavy turnout, visitors appreciated the arrangements made by the district administration to ensure the festival proceeded smoothly. Police personnel managed crowd movement through a dedicated command and control system, while public announcements helped reunite several pilgrims who had become separated from their family members. Sanitation teams also earned praise for maintaining cleanliness across the festival grounds despite the large number of visitors.
Local MLA Participates in Traditional Ritual
Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy attended the event along with his wife, Kotamreddy Sujitha, and his brother, Kotamreddy Giridhar Reddy. The family first participated in the customary ritual at Swarnala Cheruvu before offering prayers at the Bara Shaheed Dargah.
While speaking to reporters, Sridhar Reddy explained the significance behind the rotis he exchanged during the ceremony. According to him, the first offering was made with the hope that his brother would achieve his political aspiration of becoming an MLA.
Prayers Linked to State Development
The MLA said his second offering reflected his wish for Andhra Pradesh’s continued progress under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh. His third symbolic roti represented a vision of building a prosperous and developed “Golden Andhra Pradesh” through sustained investment and economic growth.
Sridhar Reddy also highlighted development initiatives undertaken in his constituency, stating that projects worth nearly Rs 700 crore had been executed over the past two years. He added that several additional works are currently moving through the tendering process and are expected to begin in the coming months.
The annual Rottela Panduga continues to stand out as one of Andhra Pradesh’s most distinctive religious festivals, bringing together people from different regions and communities while preserving a tradition that has been observed for generations.
