Hyderabad Development – Major Urban Expansion Plans Announced Across Telangana
Hyderabad Development – Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday unveiled a series of major development plans aimed at strengthening Hyderabad’s infrastructure and improving public services across the state. Among the key announcements was the construction of a large international bus terminal at Gajularamaram, spread over nearly 100 acres. The Chief Minister stated that work on the project is expected to begin within the next three months as part of a broader strategy to modernize urban transport facilities.
Focus on Hyderabad’s Future Growth
The announcement came during a public gathering held after the foundation stone was laid for the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation headquarters. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also inaugurated several development projects valued at approximately Rs 1,674.74 crore. He emphasized that the state administration would dedicate the next two years primarily to accelerating development initiatives in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana.
According to Reddy, Hyderabad continues to play a significant role in India’s economic growth and requires carefully planned expansion to meet future demands. He noted that several major Indian metropolitan cities are grappling with challenges such as heavy traffic, environmental concerns, and urban flooding. To avoid similar issues, he said Hyderabad’s growth must be guided by long-term planning and efficient infrastructure development.
Administrative Reforms for Better Governance
Explaining the government’s urban management strategy, the Chief Minister said the Greater Hyderabad region has been divided into three separate corporations. The move, he noted, is intended to improve administrative efficiency and ensure smoother coordination among civic bodies and law enforcement agencies. Clearly defined boundaries are expected to enhance governance and support faster implementation of public services.
Housing Plans for Families Across Income Groups
A significant portion of the government’s development agenda focuses on housing. Reddy announced plans to construct one lakh homes for lower-income and middle-income families within Greater Hyderabad. He said the administration is examining ways to recover encroached government land and use it for residential projects designed for economically weaker sections.
The Chief Minister added that efforts would be made to provide housing to eligible beneficiaries in their existing neighborhoods whenever possible. He referred to earlier housing models that aimed to minimize displacement and maintain community connections.
Metro Expansion and Transport Improvements
As part of Hyderabad’s long-term infrastructure roadmap, the government is also advancing the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel times, and support the city’s growing population. Alongside metro development, the proposed international bus terminal is expected to strengthen public transportation networks and improve passenger convenience.
Criticism of Central Support
During his address, Reddy criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that Telangana’s representatives in Parliament and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy had not secured adequate financial assistance from the Centre for state projects. He claimed that several development initiatives, including the Musi River rejuvenation programme, were facing difficulties due to insufficient support from the Union government.
The Chief Minister also invited political opponents to engage in a public discussion comparing the performance of different administrations, including the previous Telangana government, the Narendra Modi-led Central government, and the current Congress administration in the state.
Welfare Programmes Remain a Priority
Highlighting social welfare measures implemented by his government, Reddy pointed to initiatives such as free bus travel for women, student breakfast programmes, women empowerment schemes, and efforts aimed at expanding access to quality education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. He said these programmes would continue alongside infrastructure and urban development projects as part of the government’s broader development agenda.
