Heatwave – Delhi Braces for Four More Days of Extreme Temperatures

Heatwave- Residents across Delhi continued to struggle under intense summer conditions on Monday as temperatures climbed close to 45 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue in the national capital from May 19 to May 22, raising concerns over public health and rising electricity consumption.

Delhi heatwave four day alert

Yellow Alert Issued for Tuesday

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday, cautioning people about prolonged exposure to extreme heat during daytime hours. Meteorologists indicated that temperatures in several parts of the city could touch the 45-degree mark over the next two days if dry weather conditions persist.

According to IMD data, Delhi’s primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. The reading made it the hottest day experienced in the month of May in the past two years. Morning temperatures also remained unusually high, with minimum temperatures staying above seasonal averages at many monitoring stations across the city.

Dry Desert Winds Intensify Heat Across Capital

Weather experts attributed the sharp rise in temperature to hot and dry northwesterly winds reaching Delhi from Rajasthan’s Thar Desert and adjoining areas of central Pakistan. These winds absorb heat while passing through large arid regions and eventually push extremely dry air into the capital.

Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Climate and Meteorology at Skymet Weather, explained that the dry airflow is trapping heat near the surface, making outdoor conditions increasingly uncomfortable. The absence of moisture in the atmosphere has further reduced the chances of relief from the ongoing heat spell.

He also stated that there is currently no indication of thunderstorms or pre-monsoon rainfall activity over Delhi and nearby regions during the next 10 days. This means daytime temperatures are likely to remain elevated throughout the week.

Rising Power Consumption Reflects Heat Stress

The prolonged heat has also led to a major increase in electricity demand across the capital. Delhi’s peak power demand on Monday reached 7,542 megawatts, marking the highest electricity consumption recorded so far this summer season.

Officials estimate that if the current weather pattern continues, the city’s power demand could cross 9,000 megawatts in the coming weeks. Increased use of air conditioners, coolers, and refrigeration systems during peak afternoon hours has placed additional pressure on the power infrastructure.

Power distribution agencies have been preparing for higher demand by strengthening supply arrangements and monitoring grid performance. Authorities have also urged residents to use electricity responsibly during peak hours to avoid unnecessary load on the system.

Health Precautions Advised Amid Severe Heat

Health experts have advised people to remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day, especially between noon and 4 pm. Elderly citizens, children, and outdoor workers are considered the most vulnerable during heatwave conditions.

Doctors recommend staying hydrated, wearing light cotton clothing, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure. Residents have also been asked to watch for symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, dehydration, and heat exhaustion.

With no immediate relief expected from changing weather patterns, Delhi is likely to witness another challenging week under intense summer conditions
