Healthcare – For many young medical professionals, obtaining mandatory registration documents has become an unexpected hurdle, creating uncertainty at a critical stage of their careers. Several doctors in Delhi have reported prolonged delays in receiving registration approvals and related certifications from the Delhi Medical Association (DMA), affecting employment opportunities, academic plans, and international career prospects.
Doctors claim that processes which were previously completed within a few days or weeks are now taking several months. Many believe the delays are linked to administrative disruptions that followed the dissolution of the council in 2025 and subsequent changes in leadership positions.
Registration Delays Affecting Professional Progress
Under existing regulations, allopathic practitioners working in Delhi must secure DMA registration before they can legally practice. The registration certificate plays a key role in government appointments, salary disbursement, postgraduate admissions, transfers to other states, and overseas credential verification.
Several affected doctors said the waiting period for fresh registrations, no-objection certificates, and good-standing certificates has stretched far beyond normal timelines. As a result, many professionals have been unable to move forward with important career decisions.
One doctor currently serving at a government hospital in Delhi stated that her application for permanent registration remains pending despite document verification being completed weeks ago. According to her, officials had initially indicated that the registration number would be issued within a few weeks.
However, the certificate has yet to arrive, leading to delays in salary processing because the required registration proof could not be submitted to the employer.
Challenges Inside Hospitals
The impact of the delay extends beyond financial concerns. The doctor explained that without an official registration number, she has been unable to obtain a personal medical stamp required for professional documentation. Consequently, she has had to rely on a senior colleague’s credentials while carrying out routine responsibilities.
Medical professionals say such situations create unnecessary complications in daily clinical work and place additional pressure on young doctors who are already managing demanding schedules.
Overseas Opportunities Put on Hold
The issue has also affected doctors pursuing opportunities outside India. One doctor who relocated to the United Kingdom for career advancement said that verification procedures connected to her DMA registration have remained unresolved since late 2025.
According to her, the prolonged delay resulted in the loss of a job opportunity abroad. She said the pending verification disrupted not only employment plans but also visa-related timelines and future professional prospects.
The doctor described the experience as particularly stressful, noting that managing studies, work commitments, accommodation, and financial obligations in a foreign country is already challenging without additional administrative uncertainties.
Administrative Concerns Under Scrutiny
The matter has gained renewed attention following the recent DMA elections. Several members have called for immediate action to address the growing backlog of applications and certificates.
Former DMA president Dr. Ashwini Dalmiya stated that the absence of a full-time registrar and repeated administrative transitions contributed significantly to the accumulation of pending cases.
He noted that registrations and various certificates require official approvals and signatures, making smooth administrative functioning essential for timely processing. According to him, numerous doctors have reached out in recent days seeking assistance regarding unresolved applications.
Former Officials Highlight Structural Issues
Another former DMA president, Dr. Ajay Lekhi, acknowledged that administrative changes have affected the pace of processing. He pointed out that a doctor cannot legally practice allopathic medicine in Delhi without a valid DMA registration number.
At the same time, he explained that some applications involve verification from universities, medical colleges, and medical councils in other states. Such external checks can sometimes add additional time to the process.
Calls for Faster Resolution
With many applications still awaiting clearance, doctors say uncertainty continues to affect professional and personal planning. Young practitioners, particularly those seeking employment, higher education, or international opportunities, remain among the most impacted.
Despite growing concerns, responses from DMA officials regarding the status of pending registrations and certificates were not available at the time of publication. Medical professionals and association members are now urging authorities to prioritize clearing the backlog and restoring normal processing timelines.
