Green Steel – Kadapa Project Signals Andhra Pradesh’s Clean Industry Push
Green Steel – The launch of construction work for a green steel plant in Kadapa has been described by Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar as an important development for the state’s industrial and clean energy ambitions.

The project was formally initiated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday. According to the minister, the facility is planned as India’s first steel manufacturing project designed around the use of green energy, reflecting the state government’s effort to encourage lower-carbon industrial growth.
Rs 2,000 crore investment planned for Kadapa facility
The proposed green steel plant is expected to involve an investment of Rs 2,000 crore and have a power capacity of 400 MW. The project is also projected to support employment and livelihood opportunities for around 1,000 people through direct jobs as well as associated economic activity.
Ravi Kumar said the initiative could help strengthen Kadapa’s industrial base while creating opportunities for local workers, service providers and businesses connected to the project. He noted that large industrial developments can have a wider economic impact when they are linked to local employment and supply chains.
State targets major expansion in renewable capacity
The minister said Andhra Pradesh is working on a broader plan to emerge as a significant centre for renewable energy and green industries. He referred to the Union government’s national target of building 500 GW of renewable energy capacity and said the state has set its own target of developing 160 GW of green energy capacity.
The state’s strategy includes expanding renewable power generation and creating infrastructure that can support industries seeking cleaner energy sources. The government is looking to bring together industrial investment, power development and employment generation under a long-term growth plan.
Focus on solar, wind and energy storage projects
According to Ravi Kumar, Andhra Pradesh is encouraging investment in several clean energy segments. These include solar power, wind energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Pumped Storage Projects, green hydrogen and Compressed Biogas.
Battery storage and pumped storage projects are seen as important for improving the reliability of renewable power, particularly when solar and wind generation changes during the day. Green hydrogen and compressed biogas are also being promoted as part of efforts to support cleaner fuels for industry and transport.
The minister said the government is providing policy support and investor-friendly measures to help speed up development in these areas. The objective is to create an environment in which companies can establish projects with clearer regulatory support and access to the required infrastructure.
Government seeks sustainable industrial growth
Ravi Kumar said investor interest in Andhra Pradesh has increased under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with several industrial groups exploring new projects in the state.
He said the government is placing emphasis on investments that can generate jobs on a large scale, particularly for young people, while also supporting sustainable industrial development. The Kadapa green steel project, he added, represents the type of investment the state hopes to attract as it expands its renewable energy and manufacturing sectors.
