FuelCrisis – Delhi Advises Private Firms to Introduce Two-Day Remote Work Policy
FuelCrisis – The Delhi government has urged private companies and business establishments across the national capital to introduce a two-day work-from-home arrangement as part of ongoing efforts to reduce fuel consumption. The advisory comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to revive certain precautionary practices seen during the Covid-19 period, including remote working and online classes, amid concerns related to fuel usage and energy conservation.

Advisory Focuses on Reducing Daily Fuel Consumption
In an official communication issued by the Delhi Labour Department on Sunday, authorities highlighted that office commuting remains one of the biggest contributors to the city’s daily vehicular fuel consumption. To address this issue, private organisations have been encouraged to allow employees to work remotely for at least two days every week wherever operationally feasible.
The advisory also suggested that companies revise office timings to ease traffic congestion during peak hours. Businesses were further asked to motivate staff members to opt for carpooling or use public transport systems to reduce the overall pressure on fuel demand in the city.
Essential Services Exempted From Restrictions
The Delhi government clarified that the latest recommendations would not apply to organisations involved in essential public services. Sectors linked to healthcare, electricity supply, water distribution, and other critical infrastructure operations have been kept outside the scope of the work-from-home advisory.
Officials stated that uninterrupted functioning of these services remains a priority, and any fuel-saving measures would be implemented without affecting public convenience or emergency response systems.
Campaign Launched to Encourage Public Participation
The advisory follows the launch of the “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan” campaign introduced by the Delhi government earlier this week. The 90-day initiative aims to encourage wider participation from residents, institutions, and government departments in supporting measures linked to self-reliance and resource conservation.
The campaign has been designed to involve citizens directly in reducing unnecessary fuel consumption and promoting responsible energy usage across different sectors. Authorities believe that public participation will play a key role in managing consumption levels more effectively.
Government Departments Already Following New Measures
Last week, the Delhi administration had already implemented several austerity measures across government offices to reduce the use of petrol, diesel, and CNG. Under the new system, most Delhi government departments have shifted to a two-day remote working model for employees.
However, departments involved in delivering critical civic services have continued normal operations to avoid disruptions. Officials said the steps are intended to support broader conservation goals while ensuring essential governance functions continue smoothly.
Transportation Identified as Major Contributor
Government officials noted that daily travel for work purposes accounts for a substantial share of fuel consumption in Delhi. With millions of people commuting every day, reducing the number of vehicles on roads even for a limited number of days each week could significantly lower fuel demand.
Experts also believe that flexible office schedules and increased use of public transport could help reduce traffic congestion and pollution levels alongside fuel savings. Several companies in the private sector had earlier adopted hybrid work systems during the pandemic, making the transition easier for many organisations.
The Delhi government is expected to continue reviewing the impact of these measures over the coming weeks as part of its larger strategy to manage fuel usage efficiently while maintaining economic activity across the capital.
