Parliamentary Panel Seeks Accountability

The Parliamentary Committee on Health and Family Welfare called senior representatives from both ministries to explain the arrangements being made for the re-test. The meeting was held in response to concerns that emerged after the undergraduate medical entrance examination conducted on May 3 was cancelled on May 12.

Officials from the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the examination, and the National Medical Commission (NMC), responsible for medical education regulation, were also present before the panel. Members of the committee sought detailed information regarding the preventive measures adopted to maintain the credibility of the examination process.

Demand for Stronger Examination Security

During the discussion, committee members stressed the need for a highly secure and reliable entrance examination system. They pointed out that several countries, including China and the United States, regularly conduct large-scale competitive examinations without facing recurring incidents of paper leaks.

The lawmakers encouraged the concerned agencies to study international examination practices and implement proven security mechanisms. They emphasized that strengthening operational systems and adopting global standards could help restore confidence among students and parents.

Better Coordination Between Agencies Recommended

Committee members also highlighted the importance of closer coordination between the NTA and the NMC. According to those present at the meeting, lawmakers felt that improved communication and administrative cooperation between the two organizations would help prevent future disruptions and ensure smoother conduct of medical entrance examinations.

Officials reportedly assured the panel that multiple layers of security and monitoring would be in place during the June 21 re-examination to safeguard the integrity of the process.

Concerns Raised Over Student Mental Health

Apart from examination security, the committee expressed concern about the growing psychological pressure faced by students preparing for competitive entrance tests. Members referred to increasing reports of student suicides and rising anxiety levels among aspirants.

The panel noted that repeated incidents involving examination irregularities, cancellations, and uncertainty can significantly affect the mental well-being of candidates. Lawmakers urged authorities to remain sensitive to these challenges while designing future examination frameworks.

Third Appearance Before Parliamentary Committees

This was the third occasion on which senior officials from the Health and Education Ministries, along with representatives of the NTA and NMC, appeared before parliamentary committees regarding the NEET-UG controversy.

Earlier, the same officials had briefed parliamentary panels related to education and informed them that the priority was to conduct the June 21 re-examination through the traditional pen-and-paper mode. Authorities have maintained that efforts are focused on ensuring fairness and minimizing any possibility of malpractice.

CBI Updates Lawmakers on Investigation

Separately, Central Bureau of Investigation Director Praveen Sood also appeared before a parliamentary panel to provide an update on the ongoing probe into the alleged paper leak case. The discussion reportedly covered the progress of the investigation, actions taken so far, and efforts being made to identify and apprehend individuals linked to the matter.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the examination irregularities and work towards strengthening trust in the country’s medical entrance testing system.
