Elections – West Bengal Expands Polling Network Ahead of Assembly Vote
Elections – The Election Commission of India has cleared a significant expansion of polling infrastructure in West Bengal as preparations intensify for the upcoming Assembly elections. The decision includes the establishment of 4,660 additional auxiliary polling stations and the relocation of 321 existing booths, a move aimed at making the voting process more accessible and efficient for citizens across the state.

Increase in Polling Stations to Ease Voter Load
With the latest changes, the total number of polling stations in West Bengal has risen to 85,379. Officials say the expansion is intended to reduce overcrowding at busy locations and ensure that voters can cast their ballots without long waiting times. The elections will be conducted in two phases, scheduled for April 23 and April 29, while vote counting will take place on May 4.
According to senior officials, auxiliary polling stations have largely been set up in areas where the number of registered voters exceeded 1,200. By splitting voter loads across more booths, authorities expect smoother crowd management and a more streamlined polling experience.
Strategic Relocation of Polling Booths
In addition to increasing the number of polling stations, certain booths have been relocated to improve accessibility. These changes are particularly focused on areas where voters previously faced logistical challenges, such as difficult terrain or inconvenient travel distances.
Election authorities have stressed that every effort is being made to ensure voters are aware of these changes. Instructions have been issued to inform affected voters individually, reducing the chances of confusion on polling day and helping ensure that all eligible voters can participate without difficulty.
Clear Communication with Voters Emphasised
The Commission has directed the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal to ensure that information regarding relocated polling stations is communicated clearly and effectively. Officials are expected to reach out directly to voters whose polling locations have changed, ensuring transparency and minimizing disruption.
This approach reflects a broader effort to maintain clarity and trust in the electoral process. Authorities believe that proper communication will play a key role in preventing last-minute issues and encouraging voter turnout.
Measures to Ensure Free and Fair Elections
Alongside logistical preparations, comprehensive instructions have been issued to administrative and police officials throughout the state. These directives emphasize maintaining law and order and ensuring that elections are conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner.
Officials at all levels, including district administrations and law enforcement agencies, have been tasked with preventing any form of malpractice. Strict monitoring systems are being put in place to deter activities such as intimidation, inducements, or attempts to disrupt the voting process.
The Commission has reiterated that the electoral environment must remain free from fear and undue influence, ensuring that every voter can exercise their democratic right independently.
Improved Facilities at Polling Stations
To enhance voter comfort, all polling stations will be equipped with assured minimum facilities. These include drinking water, shaded waiting areas, toilets, proper lighting, ramps for persons with disabilities, and clear signage.
In addition, voter assistance booths will be set up to help individuals locate their polling stations and verify their names on the electoral rolls. These steps are designed to make the voting process more user-friendly, particularly for elderly voters and those with special needs.
Additional Arrangements for Voter Convenience
Authorities are also introducing practical measures to improve the overall experience on polling day. Mobile phone deposit facilities will be available outside polling stations, and seating arrangements will be provided in queues to ensure comfort during waiting periods.
These initiatives reflect a growing emphasis on voter-centric planning, with the aim of making elections not only efficient but also accessible and comfortable for all sections of society.
