Governor Calls for Strong Voter Turnout

The Governor of West Bengal urged residents to treat the election as a vital democratic exercise and to participate in large numbers. In an official message shared online, he described voting as a meaningful responsibility that holds the power to influence the state’s future. He particularly appealed to first-time voters and women to engage enthusiastically in the process, highlighting the importance of every single vote.

Political Leaders Emphasize Peaceful Conduct

As polling commenced, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Suvendu Adhikari addressed the media, calling for calm and orderly voting throughout the day. He mentioned that he had interacted with polling representatives in his constituency and stressed the need for a peaceful atmosphere at all booths. His remarks reflected broader appeals from political leaders urging voters and party workers to maintain discipline during the election process.

Security and Arrangements at Polling Stations

At several polling stations, including those in Birbhum district, voting began at 7 a.m. under tight security. Election officials confirmed that all necessary measures had been implemented to ensure smooth operations. Security personnel were stationed outside polling booths to manage queues and maintain order, while booth-level officers assisted voters in completing the process efficiently.

Presiding Officer Swati Sarkar Pal stated that coordination between security teams and election staff was functioning effectively. She explained that voters were being guided systematically into polling stations, ensuring minimal delays. Booth Level Officers were actively involved in verifying voter details and facilitating entry into the voting area.

EVM Functioning and Contingency Measures

Officials also confirmed that Electronic Voting Machines were operating without issues. According to the presiding officer, backup plans were ready in case of technical glitches. If any malfunction occurs, the issue would be reported immediately, and replacement machines would be deployed within a short time frame to avoid disruption.

Prime Minister Appeals for Participation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also encouraged voters in West Bengal to exercise their democratic rights. In a public message, he urged citizens to turn out in large numbers and participate with enthusiasm. He echoed the call for higher involvement from young voters and women, emphasizing that voting is both a right and a responsibility in a democracy.

High-Stakes Political Contest

The election is expected to witness intense competition between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking another term in office, aiming to continue her party’s leadership in the state. Meanwhile, the BJP is making a determined effort to secure power after improving its performance in the previous election.

Election Phases and Candidate Participation

West Bengal’s Assembly elections are being conducted in two phases for all 294 seats. The first phase includes 152 constituencies, while the second phase is scheduled later in the month. The Election Commission of India has confirmed that 1,478 candidates are contesting in the initial phase alone, reflecting the scale and competitiveness of the election.

Vote counting is scheduled to take place on May 4, when the results will determine the political direction of the state for the coming years.
