Elections – TMC and BJP trade allegations ahead of Bengal polls

Elections –  The political climate in West Bengal has grown increasingly charged as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approach the 2026 Assembly elections with sharp accusations against each other. Both parties have formally approached the Election Commission, alleging violations ranging from hate speech to threatening statements, highlighting the intensity of the ongoing campaign.

Tmc bjp allegations bengal polls

Complaints escalate between rival parties

The dispute gained attention after remarks linked to the BJP’s candidate from Panihati and statements made by TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee sparked controversy. The TMC has alleged that the BJP nominee used language that was not only inappropriate but also potentially threatening toward Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In a formal letter addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Banerjee described the statements as deeply concerning. He urged the Election Commission to take immediate notice, initiate an inquiry, and ensure that strict measures are enforced to maintain fairness in the electoral process.

According to the TMC, such remarks could create an atmosphere of fear among voters and undermine democratic participation. The party has argued that this reflects a broader pattern aimed at intensifying political hostility in the state.

BJP files counter-allegations

Responding swiftly, the BJP lodged its own complaint with the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer. The party accused Kalyan Banerjee of making inflammatory and disrespectful remarks targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

As part of its submission, the BJP presented a video clip to support its claims. Party leaders stated that the comments were not isolated but part of a recurring pattern of provocative language used during the campaign.

The BJP further alleged that such statements violate the Model Code of Conduct and could influence voter sentiment unfairly. The party has called for corrective action, including the removal of the video, restrictions on future public statements by the TMC leader, and possible legal proceedings.

Panihati becomes a political flashpoint

The Panihati constituency has emerged as a focal point in the ongoing electoral contest. The BJP’s decision to nominate the mother of the RG Kar hospital doctor, who was raped and murdered last year, has added an emotional dimension to the campaign.

The case had previously triggered widespread public outrage, and the BJP has positioned the candidate as a symbol of justice and accountability. Party leaders have highlighted her candidature as a representation of resistance against crime and a call for stronger governance.

However, the TMC has taken a critical stance, accusing the BJP of using a personal tragedy for political advantage. According to TMC leaders, such moves risk diverting attention from governance issues and turning sensitive matters into campaign tools.

Concerns over election conduct

The exchange of allegations has raised concerns about the tone of political discourse in the state. Both parties have emphasized the need for the Election Commission to ensure that campaigning remains within the boundaries of the law.

Observers note that as the election draws closer, such disputes may become more frequent, reflecting the high stakes involved. The Election Commission is expected to review the complaints and determine whether any violations have occurred under the Model Code of Conduct.

For voters, the focus remains on how these developments may impact the overall fairness and integrity of the electoral process. As campaigning intensifies, maintaining a balanced and respectful political environment will be crucial.
