Elections – Enhanced Security Measures Rolled Out Ahead of Bengal Poll Phase

Elections –  As West Bengal moves toward the second phase of its Assembly elections scheduled for April 29, the Election Commission of India has introduced additional security measures aimed at ensuring a smooth and fair voting process. Authorities have decided to widen surveillance coverage, particularly focusing on areas surrounding sensitive polling stations, following concerns raised during the first phase.

Bengal election security measures

Expanded Surveillance Beyond Polling Booths

During the initial phase of voting, CCTV cameras were placed inside polling stations—one within the voting room and another just outside—to monitor activities and prevent malpractice. However, reports of voter intimidation outside these premises prompted officials to reassess their strategy.

For the upcoming phase, surveillance will not be limited to the immediate polling area. Cameras will now be installed along approach roads leading to critical or hypersensitive polling stations. This move is intended to monitor any suspicious activity before voters even reach the booths, ensuring a safer environment throughout the voting process.

The number of cameras deployed will vary depending on the perceived sensitivity of each polling station, allowing authorities to allocate resources where they are most needed.

Strict Movement Controls Near Polling Locations

To maintain order, strict entry regulations have been imposed within a 100-metre radius of polling stations. Individuals who are not registered voters will not be permitted in this zone. Even voters who have already cast their ballots will not be allowed to linger near polling sites.

Additionally, those tasked with delivering essential items such as food or water to election staff will require formal approval from the district electoral officer. Without such authorization, entry will be denied.

Security personnel will also conduct thorough checks of both individuals and the items they carry. These steps are aimed at minimizing risks and preventing any disruption during the voting process.

Appeal for High Voter Participation

The Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has urged citizens to participate actively in the democratic exercise. Emphasizing voter safety, the official assured the public that adequate arrangements have been made to protect voters at every stage.

Voters have been encouraged to turn out in large numbers, with the aim of surpassing the turnout recorded in the first phase. Authorities have also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to obstruct the voting process. Political parties have been formally informed about these measures to ensure compliance.

Crackdown on Illegal Activities Before Poll Day

In parallel with surveillance efforts, central security forces deployed for the elections have been instructed to intensify operations against illegal activities, particularly the manufacture of crude explosives.

Officials have been directed to carry out targeted actions against individuals involved in such activities and to ensure that any explosive materials are neutralized well before polling begins. The goal is to eliminate any threat that could disrupt the election or endanger voters.

These directives come in the wake of recent law enforcement action in South 24 Parganas district, where a key suspect linked to a blast incident was apprehended by national investigators. The timing of the arrest has reinforced the urgency of preventive measures ahead of polling day.

Focus on Peaceful and Transparent Voting

With these combined efforts, the Election Commission aims to create a secure and transparent voting environment across all constituencies participating in the second phase. The expanded surveillance, stricter controls, and proactive policing reflect a broader strategy to address challenges observed earlier.

Authorities remain focused on ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their right freely, without fear or interference.
