Elections – Early Postal Ballot Trends Show Tight Contests Across Key States
Elections – Counting of votes began on Monday for crucial assembly elections held across 823 constituencies spanning four states and one Union Territory, setting the stage for closely watched political outcomes. Initial indications emerging from postal ballots suggest an early advantage for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance in Assam, where it is leading in 25 seats, while the Congress-led alliance trails with leads in seven constituencies.

Close Battle Emerges in Southern States
In Kerala, the electoral race is shaping into a tightly contested fight between the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front. Early trends show both alliances crossing the 50-seat mark in leads, reflecting a highly competitive political landscape in the state.
Tamil Nadu has also reported early momentum in favor of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which appears to be ahead of the AIADMK-led alliance based on initial counts. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, the contest remains unpredictable, with fluctuating leads between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, indicating a neck-and-neck competition.
Counting Process and Official Confirmation Awaited
The figures available so far are based on postal ballot counting, which commenced earlier in the morning. Counting of votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) was scheduled to begin at 8:30 am. The Election Commission of India has yet to release official consolidated trends, and the situation is expected to evolve as more rounds of counting are completed.
Security Tightened Around Counting Centres
Authorities implemented strict security measures at counting centres to ensure a smooth and transparent process. In West Bengal’s Malda district, armoured vehicle patrols were conducted as a precautionary step. Across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, strong rooms containing EVMs were opened under tight supervision ahead of counting operations.
In Tamil Nadu, a three-tier security arrangement was put in place early in the day. Security personnel were stationed at key entry points, with barricades and vehicle checks being carried out thoroughly before allowing access to counting premises.
Dispute Between Party Agents at Counting Centre
Tensions were reported at a counting centre in West Bengal, where representatives from rival political parties engaged in a heated exchange. A polling agent from the Trinamool Congress alleged unequal enforcement of rules, claiming their representatives were not permitted to carry basic materials such as files and pens inside the centre, while similar items were reportedly allowed for BJP agents.
In response, BJP representatives countered the allegations, stating that TMC agents had failed to carry valid identification cards, which are mandatory for entry. They further accused their counterparts of creating unnecessary disruption during the counting process.
Key Counting Locations and Arrangements
Several major institutions were designated as counting centres in Tamil Nadu. Loyola College, one of the primary locations, is handling the counting of votes from a large electorate of approximately 4.8 crore voters. Additional centres include Queen Mary’s College and Anna University, all operating under strict supervision and security protocols.
As counting progresses throughout the day, clearer trends are expected to emerge, offering a more definitive picture of the electoral outcomes across these politically significant regions.
