The order is based on provisions outlined under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. It follows a communication issued by the Election Commission on March 16, 2026, which scheduled the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections for April 29.

Focus on Enabling Voting Rights

Authorities have emphasized that the step is intended to protect the democratic rights of workers who might otherwise be unable to vote due to professional commitments. Many individuals from West Bengal are employed in Delhi, and the government’s directive aims to remove barriers that could prevent them from traveling to their home state for voting.
