Elections – Congress Faces Leadership Test as Assam Polls Approach
Elections – The Congress party is heading into the upcoming elections in Assam under challenging circumstances, grappling with a series of defections and what many observers describe as a leadership gap. State president Gaurav Gogoi appears to be the party’s most prominent figure with influence across regions, as the party works to rebuild its organisational strength and voter confidence.

Alliance Strategy Gains Ground
Gogoi has expressed strong confidence in the six-party Opposition alliance, highlighting its growing acceptance among grassroots workers and supporters. According to him, the coalition is not merely a top-level arrangement but a coordinated effort involving party cadres across the state. He believes this unity reflects a broader public desire to challenge the current administration led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He also pointed out that the alliance is among the most significant political developments in recent years, particularly in Upper Assam. The coalition, he said, was formed in response to public demand for inclusive growth and decentralised development, ensuring that regions beyond Guwahati receive equal attention.
ST Status Demand Remains Unresolved
One of the key issues shaping the political discourse is the long-standing demand for Scheduled Tribe status by six communities, including Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak, Moran, Tai Ahom and Tea Tribes. Gogoi noted that these groups have been seeking recognition for decades, but successive efforts by the current government have not produced tangible results.
He emphasised that repeated formation of committees and ministerial groups has failed to resolve the issue, leading to continued uncertainty and mistrust among both the applicant communities and existing Scheduled Tribes. Gogoi argued that a transparent and inclusive institutional mechanism is necessary, involving legal experts, demographers and representatives from all stakeholders, to arrive at a solution that can withstand legal scrutiny and gain parliamentary approval.
Evictions and Political Polarisation
Eviction drives have emerged as another major election issue. Gogoi criticised the current government’s approach, alleging that such actions are being used to create divisions and influence public perception rather than address legal concerns effectively.
He claimed that official records indicate more structured and lawful eviction processes during previous Congress administrations compared to the present government. He also referred to recent statements by a former BJP office-bearer who questioned the transparency of current eviction practices.
Defections and Party Realignment
The Congress has also faced the departure of several leaders to the BJP. Gogoi acknowledged these shifts but suggested that voters would ultimately decide their political future. He described the current political landscape in Assam as undergoing a broader realignment, with leaders from both parties changing sides.
According to him, many former Congress leaders now in the BJP were previously associated with controversies that had affected the party’s image. At the same time, he noted that several long-time BJP leaders have reportedly been sidelined, indicating internal changes within the ruling party as well.
Congress Pitch to Voters
Outlining his party’s priorities, Gogoi said Congress is focusing on improving education, ensuring transparent governance and maintaining social harmony. He criticised the current administration for closing government schools and fostering divisions within society.
He also argued that the BJP’s governance has negatively affected the perception of Assam and the broader Northeast region, portraying it in an unfavourable light.
Response to Political Allegations
Addressing allegations related to his past foreign visits, Gogoi dismissed them as misleading claims. He stated that voters have become aware of such narratives and are capable of distinguishing between political rhetoric and factual issues.
As Assam prepares for elections, the evolving alliances, unresolved policy questions and shifting political loyalties are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the outcome.
