ElectionResults –   The Congress-led United Democratic Front is preparing to assume power in Kerala after registering a sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday described the alliance’s electoral performance as historic and said the party was encouraged by the overwhelming support received from voters across the state.

Kharge spoke to reporters before leaving Bengaluru to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister-designate VD Satheesan in Thiruvananthapuram. He said the scale of the mandate reflected strong public confidence in the new administration and called the result one of the most significant victories for the alliance in recent years.

Grand Ceremony Planned in State Capital

VD Satheesan is scheduled to take oath as Kerala’s Chief Minister at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The ceremony is expected to begin at 10 am, with the full Council of Ministers taking the oath alongside the Chief Minister.

The event marks a rare political moment in the state, as the entire Cabinet is being sworn in together after several decades. The formal announcement of the complete ministerial lineup was made ahead of the ceremony following discussions within the coalition.

On Sunday, Satheesan met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan and submitted the official list of ministers who will join the new government.

Cabinet Formation Reflects Coalition Balance

Speaking during a press interaction ahead of the ceremony, Satheesan acknowledged that forming the Cabinet involved difficult decisions due to the large number of senior leaders and legislators within the alliance.

He said multiple factors were considered while selecting ministers, including regional representation, coalition commitments, social balance, and adequate participation of women and Scheduled Caste communities. According to him, several deserving leaders could not be accommodated despite their contributions and experience.

The Chief Minister-designate stated that the alliance aimed to maintain inclusiveness while ensuring that different sections of society received representation in the government structure.

Senior Leaders Included in New Ministry

The 20-member Cabinet announced by the United Democratic Front includes several experienced political figures and representatives from alliance partners. Senior Congress leaders Ramesh Chennithala and K Muraleedharan have been included in the ministry, along with Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunny Joseph.

Leaders from the Indian Union Muslim League have also secured important positions in the Cabinet. The party had earlier finalized its nominees as part of the coalition agreement.

Other leaders named in the ministry include PK Basheer, N Samsudheen, KM Shaji, VE Abdul Gafoor, Mons Joseph, Shibu Baby John, Anoop Jacob, CP John, AP Anil Kumar, T Siddique, PC Vishnunath, Roji M John, Bindu Krishna, M Liju, KA Thulasi and O J Janeesh.

UDF Ends Decade-Long LDF Rule

The Assembly election outcome brought a major political shift in Kerala, ending ten years of rule by the Left Democratic Front. The Congress-led alliance secured a commanding majority in the 140-member Assembly and comfortably crossed the halfway mark.

The Indian National Congress emerged as the largest party within the coalition by winning 63 seats. The Indian Union Muslim League added 22 seats, helping the alliance achieve a total of 102 seats in the Assembly.

The Left Democratic Front was reduced to 35 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party won three constituencies in the state.

Political observers believe the decisive result reflects public expectations for administrative change and stronger governance. The new government is expected to focus on economic management, welfare measures, employment generation, and infrastructure development as it begins its term in office
