Election – Datia Assembly Bypoll Witnesses Strong Voter Turnout Amid Tight Security
Election – Voting for the Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh began smoothly at 7 a.m. on Thursday, with a large number of voters reaching polling stations before the scheduled opening time. Election authorities reported an orderly start to the polling process, supported by extensive security arrangements across the constituency. Voting is scheduled to continue until 6 p.m.
High Voter Participation Seen Since Early Morning
The Datia Assembly bypoll has drawn significant public participation, with long queues forming outside several polling centres from the early hours of the morning. According to election officials, 2,20,400 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 291 polling stations established throughout the constituency. The steady flow of voters reflects strong public interest in the electoral process.
The by-election features a direct contest between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ashutosh Tiwari and Congress nominee Ghanshyam Singh. Singh has previously represented the Datia Assembly constituency twice, making the contest one of the closely watched political battles in the state.
Multi-Layered Security Arrangements in Place
Authorities have deployed extensive security personnel to ensure peaceful and transparent polling. A total of 1,422 security personnel drawn from 16 companies, including the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), have been stationed across the constituency.
Extra security has been arranged at polling stations identified as sensitive, while sector mobile teams are conducting regular patrols to maintain law and order throughout the voting process. Officials stated that these measures have been implemented to provide voters with a safe environment to exercise their democratic rights.
Polling Process Under Continuous Monitoring
District authorities are closely supervising the election process using digital monitoring systems. Datia Collector and District Election Officer Swapnil Wankhede said that polling activities at all designated booths are being monitored continuously through webcasting from the control room located at the Collectorate.
The Election Commission has adopted these monitoring arrangements to ensure transparency and allow immediate response to any issues that may arise during polling hours.
Election Commission Lists Alternative Identity Documents
The Election Commission of India has reminded voters that possession of the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is not mandatory for casting a vote. Citizens who do not have their voter identity card can still participate in the election by presenting any one of the 13 approved photo identity documents.
These accepted documents include the Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, driving licence, bank or post office passbook carrying a photograph, pension documents, health insurance smart card, MGNREGA job card, and the Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID), among other approved identity proofs.
Rain Alert Issued for the Constituency
The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory indicating the possibility of rainfall in the Datia region during polling hours. Election officials have advised voters to carry umbrellas or raincoats while visiting polling stations so that weather conditions do not affect voter participation.
Authorities said all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that polling continues without disruption even if rain occurs during the day.
Vote Counting Scheduled for August 3
The by-election is being conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India with a focus on ensuring free, fair and peaceful polling. Officials have confirmed that vote counting will take place on August 3 in accordance with the election schedule announced by the poll panel. The results will determine the next representative for the Datia Assembly constituency.
