Election Commission – Opposition Parties Submit Joint Appeal to Chief Justice Over Voter Roll Revision
Election Commission – A group of 23 political parties, including the DMK and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has jointly approached Chief Justice Surya Kant, raising concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The joint representation, submitted on Tuesday, also highlights several election-related issues that the Opposition believes require judicial attention.

Joint Representation Follows INDIA Bloc Consensus
The letter comes after an INDIA bloc meeting held on June 8, where participating parties agreed to collectively express their concerns before the Chief Justice. According to Opposition leaders, the memorandum focuses on the implementation of the Special Intensive Revision, allegations of irregularities in voter list updates, and broader questions surrounding the fairness of the electoral process.
Sources familiar with the communication said the four-page letter refers to the voter roll revision exercise in states including Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Haryana. The signatories have alleged that the Election Commission has not acted in a politically neutral manner while handling several election-related matters.
Opposition Leaders Raise Concerns
Speaking after the submission, Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad criticised the BJP, accusing it of engaging in political practices such as vote manipulation and defections of elected representatives. He also questioned the role of the Chief Election Commissioner, referring to previous public controversies and arguing that such issues deserve closer scrutiny.
RJD MP Manoj Jha described the matter as one that extends beyond electoral statistics. He said the concerns relate to the protection of democratic rights and urged the Supreme Court to provide constitutional guidance. According to him, the issue affects the country’s democratic framework rather than any individual political party, and he expressed apprehension about what he described as growing centralisation in the political system.
Wider Political Support for the Letter
Although both the DMK and the Aam Aadmi Party had stayed away from the June 8 INDIA bloc meeting due to differences over the Congress party’s role within the alliance, they eventually joined the joint representation submitted to the Chief Justice.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated on social media that the Opposition remained committed to what he described as “SURE” — Solidarity, Unity and Resistance. He said the decision to write to the Chief Justice had been taken collectively during the INDIA Janbandhan meeting. According to Ramesh, the final representation carried the signatures of 23 political parties along with Independent Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien also confirmed through a post on X that both the DMK and the Aam Aadmi Party were among those who endorsed the joint letter.
BJP Defends Election Commission
The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly rejected the allegations made by the Opposition. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Opposition parties of adopting contradictory positions on voter roll revisions depending on their political interests.
He argued that several parties had previously welcomed similar electoral roll revision exercises in states where the outcomes favoured them, but were now opposing the same constitutional process elsewhere. According to Poonawalla, repeated electoral setbacks have led Opposition parties to question institutions that they had earlier supported.
The BJP leader further maintained that the Supreme Court has previously recognised the importance of updating electoral rolls to ensure free and fair elections. He also asserted that the Election Commission is constitutionally empowered to conduct the Special Intensive Revision process as part of its mandate.
Debate Over Electoral Process Continues
The latest exchange reflects the continuing political disagreement over the voter roll revision exercise ahead of future elections. While Opposition parties are seeking judicial intervention over what they describe as concerns regarding electoral fairness, the BJP maintains that the Election Commission is functioning within its constitutional authority and following established legal procedures.
