Election – BJP’s Harshad Parmar Leads Strongly in Umreth Bypoll Race
Election – The counting of votes for the Umreth Assembly bypoll in Gujarat showed a decisive trend on Monday, with Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Harshad Parmar moving well ahead of his closest rival from the Congress party as rounds progressed.

Early Lead Sets the Tone
According to official figures released during the counting process, Harshad Parmar secured 33,745 votes after nine rounds. His opponent, Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, trailed with 23,310 votes. Other contenders, including three independent candidates, remained far behind and did not significantly impact the main contest.
The steady margin built by Parmar from the early rounds indicated a clear advantage, suggesting strong support for the BJP candidate in the constituency.
Counting Process Conducted Under Tight Security
The counting exercise began at 8 am at BJVM College in Anand district, where strict security arrangements were enforced. Authorities first counted 206 postal ballots along with 35 service votes before proceeding to electronic voting machine results.
Officials confirmed that the counting would be carried out in 22 rounds. As part of the verification process, VVPAT slips from five randomly selected polling stations will be matched with electronic results at the end of the counting procedure.
Nearly 700 staff members, including supervisors, assistants, and micro observers, were deployed to ensure smooth operations. A three-layer security system was implemented, restricting unauthorized access, banning mobile phones inside the counting hall, and preventing vehicles from entering within a 100-meter radius of the venue.
Voter Turnout and Contest Overview
The by-election, held on April 23, witnessed a voter turnout of 59.04 percent across 306 polling stations. A total of six candidates contested the seat, though the primary contest remained between the BJP and Congress nominees.
The polling percentage reflected moderate participation, with voters turning out in significant numbers despite the bypoll nature of the election.
Background Behind the By-Election
The Umreth by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP legislator Govind Parmar on March 6. He had represented the constituency for four consecutive terms and was considered a prominent political figure in the region.
Harshad Parmar, his son, entered the electoral fray as the BJP candidate, marking his first major political contest. His candidature drew attention due to the legacy factor and the party’s strong base in the constituency.
Profile of the Congress Candidate
Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, representing the Congress, brought considerable experience to the contest. At 62, he has served as president of the Umreth taluka panchayat for three consecutive terms between 2000 and 2015. He currently holds the position of central zone coordinator for the party in Gujarat.
Despite his local administrative experience, Chauhan faced a challenging contest against the BJP’s candidate, who appeared to benefit from both party support and voter familiarity.
Previous Election Context
In the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, the late Govind Parmar had successfully retained the Umreth seat for the BJP. The current bypoll thus became a test of whether the party could maintain its hold on the constituency in the absence of its long-time representative.
As counting continues, the trends observed so far indicate that the BJP remains firmly positioned in the race, with Harshad Parmar maintaining a consistent lead over his nearest rival
