Election – BJP Candidate Leads After Early Rounds in Koridang Bypoll
Election – The counting of votes in the Koridang Assembly by-election in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district began on Monday morning, with early trends placing BJP candidate Daochier Imchen in a clear lead. After two rounds of counting, Imchen secured a significant margin over his closest rival, indicating a strong start in the contest.

Early Counting Trends Show BJP Advantage
According to initial figures, Daochier Imchen received 4,554 votes, while his nearest competitor, National People’s Party (NPP) candidate I Abenjan, garnered 2,955 votes. This puts Imchen ahead by 1,599 votes after the first two rounds. Election officials confirmed that one more round of counting remains, which will determine the final outcome of the bypoll.
The counting process commenced at 8 am at the office of the deputy commissioner. Authorities ensured strict security arrangements at the venue, deploying multiple layers of personnel along with CCTV monitoring. These measures were put in place considering past incidents related to elections in the region.
Multi-Cornered Contest in Koridang Seat
The by-election has drawn participation from six candidates representing different political backgrounds. Apart from the BJP and NPP contenders, the Congress fielded T Chalukumba Ao as its candidate. Additionally, three Independent candidates are also in the race, making it a multi-cornered contest.
Daochier Imchen is not only representing the BJP but is also the agreed candidate of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), which is led by the Naga People’s Front. This backing has been seen as a key factor strengthening his position in the election.
Reason Behind the Bypoll
The Koridang Assembly by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L. Imchen in November last year. His passing created a vacancy in the constituency, prompting the need for a fresh mandate from the electorate.
The late legislator had been a prominent political figure in the region, and the bypoll is viewed as an important contest for both the BJP and its allies to retain influence in the constituency.
Voter Turnout Reflects Strong Participation
Polling for the by-election took place on April 9 and witnessed a high voter turnout. Official data shows that 82.21 percent of eligible voters exercised their franchise. Out of 22,382 registered voters, approximately 18,400 cast their votes across 30 polling stations in the constituency.
The strong turnout reflects active public participation and interest in the electoral process. Election authorities had made necessary arrangements to ensure smooth and peaceful polling across all stations.
Final Outcome Awaited
With one round of counting still pending, election officials are expected to announce the final result later in the day. While early trends favor the BJP candidate, the remaining votes will be crucial in confirming the outcome.
Observers note that by-election results often carry political significance beyond the constituency, as they can influence party morale and regional dynamics. All eyes are now on the final round of counting to see whether the early lead translates into a decisive victory.
