Focus on Employment and Practical Skills

The Lieutenant Governor stressed that universities should move beyond traditional academic models and prepare students for changing professional demands. He encouraged institutions to strengthen skill development programmes so graduates become more employable while also nurturing entrepreneurial abilities among students.

Officials present at the meeting said Sandhu emphasised that higher education should create socially aware and professionally capable young people who can contribute meaningfully to the economy and society. He also pointed out that universities have a responsibility to ensure that students are equipped to tackle real-world urban issues affecting Delhi residents daily.

Encouraging Sustainable Lifestyle Practices

During the discussion, the Lieutenant Governor urged institutions to create awareness among students about reducing dependence on fossil fuels. He suggested encouraging the use of public transportation, carpooling, and other environmentally responsible practices.

According to officials, Sandhu noted that the combined student population of nearly three lakh across these institutions could influence wider social behaviour through their families, friends, and communities. He described students as important agents of social change who can help spread awareness on sustainability and civic responsibility.

Student Participation in Civic Issues

University representatives attending the meeting shared that the Lieutenant Governor also encouraged greater student involvement in matters related to women’s safety, traffic management, environmental protection, water conservation, and waste disposal systems.

He reportedly said that educational institutions should actively contribute to Delhi’s broader behavioural change initiatives. The discussion focused on how universities can engage students in campaigns and projects that improve urban living conditions while promoting responsible citizenship.

Research Priorities for Delhi’s Future

A major part of the interaction focused on research areas that require immediate academic attention. Sandhu encouraged institutions to undertake collaborative and evidence-based studies addressing air pollution and environmental concerns in the capital.

Officials stated that universities were asked to examine pollution sources, sustainable urban planning methods, pollution-control technologies, and the health impact of poor air quality. The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the need for studies on water-related challenges, including fair distribution of water resources, groundwater depletion, Yamuna river restoration, and efficient management of solid and liquid waste.

The meeting further explored transport-related concerns. Sandhu called for academic research on traffic reduction strategies, improvement in last-mile connectivity, wider adoption of electric vehicles, and the use of intelligent transport systems to improve mobility in the city.

Universities Seen as Drivers of Social Change

The Lieutenant Governor underlined that universities must contribute directly to public policy discussions and urban development planning. He encouraged educational institutions to become active partners in finding long-term solutions for Delhi’s rapidly growing infrastructure and environmental pressures.

Officials present at the meeting said Sandhu repeatedly highlighted the importance of using academic research to support practical governance and sustainable development efforts. He also encouraged institutions to adopt internal practices that help reduce fuel consumption and environmental impact.

Academic Achievements Also Recognised

Alongside policy discussions, the programme also celebrated academic accomplishments across multiple disciplines. Undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students received degrees during the event, which opened with an NCC guard of honour for the dignitaries.

Research work in modern academic fields, including development studies and urban-focused disciplines, was also acknowledged during the programme. Officials said the event reflected the growing emphasis on connecting higher education with contemporary social and environmental priorities.
