Education – NEET Online Shift Faces Major Infrastructure and Capacity Challenges
Education – The National Testing Agency has indicated that conducting NEET-UG entirely in online mode is currently impractical due to limitations in technical infrastructure and the exceptionally high number of candidates appearing for the examination each year.

Massive Candidate Volume Remains Primary Challenge
Officials associated with the National Testing Agency (NTA) have clarified that the present examination ecosystem is not equipped to support a nationwide online format for NEET-UG. According to senior authorities, the scale of the medical entrance examination has become one of the biggest barriers to introducing a computer-based system immediately.
This year alone, more than 22 lakh students appeared for the examination, while registrations crossed 22.79 lakh. Authorities explained that handling such a large number of candidates through online platforms would require several continuous examination cycles spread over many days. Under the current setup, executing the process smoothly within a limited timeframe is not considered practical.
An official familiar with the matter stated that the existing online testing infrastructure across the country can accommodate only around one lakh to 1.5 lakh candidates at a single time. Expanding that capacity significantly would require large-scale technological upgrades and coordination across multiple examination centres.
Demand for Online Examination Grows After Leak Allegations
The debate around the examination format intensified after allegations of a question paper leak in the NEET-UG 2026 examination surfaced earlier this week. Parents, students, and education experts have increasingly demanded stricter security measures to restore confidence in the examination system.
Many stakeholders believe that shifting to a fully online examination could help reduce the possibility of paper leaks and improve monitoring standards. Similar concerns had also emerged in 2024 after another reported question paper leak created controversy around the national medical entrance test.
The issue has once again placed pressure on authorities to modernise the examination process while ensuring fairness and transparency for lakhs of aspirants competing for medical seats across India.
Expert Committee Had Recommended Digital Examination Model
The proposal for conducting NEET-UG through a computer-based mode was also discussed by a high-level committee formed to strengthen examination security. The seven-member panel, headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Radhakrishnan, had reportedly recommended transitioning towards a fully online examination system as part of broader reforms.
The committee was assigned the responsibility of suggesting measures to make national-level examinations more secure and reliable after repeated concerns regarding irregularities and paper leak incidents.
However, officials say implementing such recommendations immediately remains difficult because the current infrastructure does not support simultaneous testing for such a large candidate pool.
Authorities Discuss Reforms and Possible Re-Test Measures
Meanwhile, meetings have continued between officials of the NTA, the Ministry of Health, the National Medical Commission, and representatives from the Education Ministry to evaluate the recent developments linked to the examination.
Discussions are also reportedly focused on strengthening future examination procedures and reviewing possible measures related to re-testing. Authorities are examining ways to improve monitoring systems, security protocols, and operational efficiency to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Officials indicated that while a complete transition to online examinations may not happen immediately, the possibility could be explored in the coming years if the country’s digital examination infrastructure undergoes major expansion.
For now, NEET-UG is expected to continue in the traditional pen-and-paper format, which has remained the standard method for conducting the examination for candidates in India and abroad.
