Education –  A 20-year-old student preparing for the NEET medical entrance examination was found dead at her home in Delhi’s Azadpur area on Thursday, with investigators examining whether recent developments linked to the national exam may have contributed to the incident. Police officials said no suicide note was recovered, but family members believe the cancellation of the examination may have deeply affected her emotionally.

Family Suspects Emotional Distress

According to police, the young woman had been preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for the past several years and was determined to pursue a medical career. Relatives informed investigators that she had been under stress after reports emerged about the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination earlier this week.

Officials stated that the student allegedly died at her residence during the day. Her family later transported the body to a cremation ground without initially informing local authorities. Police said the family was not aware that such cases require legal procedures and police documentation before cremation.

Police Begin Detailed Investigation

The matter came to light after a Police Control Room call reached Adarsh Nagar police station on Thursday evening. Authorities were informed that a woman’s body had been brought to Kewal Park Shamshan Ghat for cremation without prior police notification.

A senior police officer confirmed that the deceased was a NEET aspirant and said investigators are trying to understand the circumstances that may have led to the tragedy. Officers have spoken to family members and are examining the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

Police have not officially established a direct connection between the examination cancellation and the student’s death. However, statements given by relatives have become part of the ongoing inquiry.

NEET-UG Cancellation Triggered National Debate

The incident comes shortly after the National Testing Agency cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted in May following allegations of a paper leak. The decision affected lakhs of students across the country and triggered widespread concern among parents, coaching institutes, and aspirants waiting for admission to medical colleges.

Many students had spent months, and in some cases years, preparing for the highly competitive examination. The sudden cancellation created uncertainty regarding future exam dates and admission timelines.

Education experts have repeatedly highlighted the intense academic pressure faced by students preparing for competitive entrance tests. Mental health professionals also stress the importance of emotional support and counselling during periods of uncertainty related to examinations and career planning.

Legal Formalities Under Review

Police officials said they are also reviewing whether all mandatory procedures were followed after the death occurred. Authorities noted that in cases involving unnatural or sudden deaths, informing police is legally necessary before funeral arrangements are carried out.

Investigators have not reported any evidence of foul play so far. The body was later taken into official custody for legal formalities and further examination as part of the inquiry process.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the emotional challenges faced by students preparing for high-pressure national examinations. Authorities continue to investigate the matter while family members remain in mourning.
