Education Crisis – The cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination has triggered sharp political reactions across the country, with several opposition leaders accusing the central government of failing to protect the integrity of one of India’s most important competitive exams.
More than 22 lakh students who appeared for the medical entrance test now face uncertainty after authorities announced the cancellation following allegations linked to paper leaks and irregularities. Political leaders from multiple parties described the situation as a major setback for students and their families, many of whom invested years of effort and significant financial resources in preparation.
Rahul Gandhi Criticises Government Over Examination Handling
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticised the government, claiming the examination system had failed aspiring medical students. In a statement shared on social media platform X, he said the dreams and hard work of lakhs of candidates had been destroyed due to what he described as negligence and corruption within the system.
He highlighted the sacrifices made by families preparing their children for the examination, mentioning that many parents had borrowed money or sold valuables to support coaching and education expenses. According to him, students instead received disappointment in the form of alleged paper leaks and administrative failures.
The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha further said the incident represented a serious blow to the future of young people seeking careers in medicine and healthcare.
Concerns Raised Over Credibility of National Examinations
CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Brittas also expressed concern regarding the repeated controversies surrounding major examinations in the country. He stated that recurring issues linked to national-level tests were weakening public confidence in the education system.
Brittas said students dedicate years to preparing for examinations such as NEET, and repeated disruptions create anxiety and uncertainty among candidates and parents alike. He urged the authorities to take corrective measures and restore trust in the examination process.
The cancellation has once again intensified debate over the functioning of examination agencies responsible for conducting large-scale entrance tests across India.
Arvind Kejriwal Alleges Political Protection in Paper Leak Cases
Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal alleged that those involved in examination paper leak cases continue to receive protection due to political influence. Addressing reporters during a press conference, he claimed that the NEET question paper had reportedly leaked multiple times over the past several years.
Kejriwal argued that despite repeated controversies, strict action had not been taken against the accused individuals. He said frustrated students might eventually be forced to organise large-scale protests because their concerns were not being addressed adequately.
The AAP leader also questioned the effectiveness of measures introduced to secure examination systems and prevent malpractice.
Opposition Demands Structural Changes in Examination System
Rashtriya Janata Dal Rajya Sabha member Manoj Jha criticised the National Testing Agency and called for major reforms in the examination structure. He questioned the impact such cancellations have on students from financially weaker and rural backgrounds who spend years preparing for highly competitive entrance tests.
Jha also expressed doubts about the ongoing investigation into the matter and argued that stronger accountability mechanisms were necessary. Opposition leaders across parties have increasingly demanded transparency, faster investigations, and stricter safeguards to prevent future examination leaks.
The NEET-UG examination is considered one of India’s most competitive entrance tests for admission to undergraduate medical courses. Any disruption in the process affects lakhs of aspirants nationwide and often leads to concerns regarding academic schedules, admissions, and student mental stress.
Meanwhile, students and parents continue to await clarity from authorities regarding the next steps, including the possibility of a fresh examination schedule and additional security measures for future tests.
