Economy – Rahul Gandhi Warns of Tough Economic Phase Ahead
Economy – Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday expressed concern over the country’s economic situation, warning that India could soon face a difficult financial phase that may heavily affect ordinary citizens. Speaking during his visit to Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi said the coming period could bring a serious economic setback, especially for young people, laborers, and small business owners.

According to Gandhi, the impact of any future economic disruption would not be felt equally across society. He claimed that large industrial groups and top political leaders would remain protected, while common citizens would carry the burden of rising economic pressure. The Congress leader said the country may soon witness an economic challenge of a scale not seen in several years.
Gandhi Questions Government’s Economic Priorities
During his remarks, Gandhi also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over what he described as a contradiction between public messaging and personal conduct. Referring to the prime minister’s recent appeals for austerity and careful spending, Gandhi alleged that such calls were not being matched by action at the top level.
He said the government was advising citizens to limit unnecessary expenses and avoid foreign travel, while senior leadership continued extensive international visits. Gandhi argued that this created confusion among the public at a time when many families and businesses were already dealing with financial uncertainty.
The Congress leader did not provide specific details about the nature of the expected economic shock, but his comments reflected the opposition party’s continued criticism of the central government’s handling of employment, inflation, and economic management.
Visit to Raebareli and Amethi Begins
Rahul Gandhi arrived in Lucknow on Tuesday morning before heading directly to Raebareli, the Lok Sabha constituency he currently represents in Parliament. Senior Congress leaders from Uttar Pradesh welcomed him at the airport, including state Congress chief Ajay Rai and Congress Legislative Party leader Aradhana Mishra.
His visit is part of a two-day political tour covering Raebareli and Amethi, both considered traditional strongholds of the Congress party. The trip comes at a time when the party is trying to strengthen its grassroots presence in Uttar Pradesh ahead of future political campaigns and organisational activities.
Focus on Local Outreach and Party Workers
Party leaders said Gandhi is expected to interact with local workers, community representatives, and residents during the visit. Meetings with district-level Congress leaders and organisational reviews are also likely to take place over the next two days.
Raebareli and Amethi have long held political importance for the Gandhi family and the Congress party. While Raebareli remains under Congress control, Amethi has witnessed tougher electoral contests in recent years, increasing the importance of regular outreach efforts by party leadership.
Political observers believe Gandhi’s visit is aimed at reinforcing the party’s connection with local voters while also highlighting national issues such as unemployment, rising prices, and economic inequality.
Opposition Continues Economic Criticism
The Congress party has repeatedly questioned the central government on economic concerns, particularly youth unemployment and the condition of small traders. Gandhi has often used public meetings and parliamentary speeches to raise concerns about economic concentration and the challenges faced by lower and middle-income groups.
His latest comments are likely to intensify political debate over the country’s economic direction, especially as opposition parties continue to focus on issues linked to jobs, inflation, and business opportunities for small enterprises.
