DowryCase – Bhopal Police File Charges Against Retired Judge, Son
DowryCase – A dowry-related case has been registered in Bhopal after the death of a 34-year-old woman triggered protests by her family and relatives. Police have named the woman’s husband and mother-in-law, a retired district judge, in the FIR following allegations of harassment linked to dowry demands.
FIR Registered After Family Protests
Assistant Police Commissioner Rajneesh Kashyap Kaul confirmed on Friday that Katara Hills Police Station filed the case late Thursday night against Giribala Singh and her son, Samarth Singh. Authorities booked both under sections related to dowry death, mental harassment, and other applicable charges.
According to police officials, teams have been sent to multiple locations to trace the accused. However, neither of them had been taken into custody at the time of reporting.
Background of the Accused
Giribala Singh retired as a district judge in Bhopal in February 2023. Her son, Samarth Singh, works as a lawyer at the District Court in the city.
The police action followed growing pressure from the deceased woman’s family, who had been staging demonstrations outside the police station for the past two days. Family members accused investigators of delaying action because of the accused family’s influence in legal circles.
Woman Found Dead at Residence
The deceased, identified as Twisha Sharma, was originally from Noida and had moved to Bhopal after her marriage. Police said she was found hanging from a pipe on the terrace of her home in Bag Mugalia Extension in Laharpur on Tuesday night.
Officials stated that her husband took her to AIIMS Bhopal soon after the incident, where doctors later declared her dead.
Twisha had married Samarth Singh on December 12, 2025, around six months before the incident. The couple reportedly met through a dating application. She held an MBA degree and had previously worked with a private company in Delhi for several years.
Family Raises Murder Allegations
The woman’s relatives have rejected the suicide theory and alleged that evidence was manipulated to present the death as self-harm. They accused Samarth Singh and his mother of attempting to mislead investigators.
Twisha’s brother, Harshit Sharma, who serves in the Indian Army, publicly questioned the pace of the investigation. He alleged that police hesitated to act because of the social and professional standing of the accused family.
Demonstrations Intensify in Bhopal
On Thursday, relatives, friends, and supporters gathered outside the Women’s Police Station carrying placards and demanding immediate arrests. Protesters later reached the Commissioner’s office, where tensions briefly escalated during demonstrations seeking stronger police action.
The incident has drawn significant public attention in Bhopal, particularly because one of the accused previously held a senior judicial position. The case has also renewed conversations around dowry harassment and the handling of suspicious deaths involving newly married women.
Police officials said further investigation is underway and additional evidence is being collected. Authorities have not yet commented on whether more charges could be added as the inquiry progresses.
