DisabilitySupport – The Maharashtra government has decided to continue welfare benefits for persons with disabilities by extending the deadline for obtaining the Unique Disability Identity (UDID) card until September 30. The move is expected to prevent disruptions in financial support provided under multiple state and central welfare schemes. Officials said the extension was approved to ensure that eligible beneficiaries are not excluded from assistance while completing the UDID registration process.
Government Decision Brings Relief to Beneficiaries
State Minister for Divyang Welfare Atul Save announced that the extension was introduced following an initiative taken by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. According to the minister, individuals who are currently receiving aid under disability welfare schemes will continue to receive their grants even if they have not yet secured a UDID card.
The administration clarified that the purpose of the decision is to avoid inconvenience for beneficiaries who are still in the process of applying for or receiving their disability identification cards. Authorities believe the additional time will help thousands complete formalities without risking the suspension of financial assistance.
Welfare Schemes to Continue Without Interruption
Several welfare programs managed by the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department are linked to the latest announcement. These include the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Anudan Yojana, Shravanbal Seva State Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, and the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme.
Officials stated that the extension applies specifically to differently-abled beneficiaries who depend on these schemes for monthly financial support. The government has assured recipients that grants under these programs will continue during the extended period.
Around 1.5 Lakh Beneficiaries Expected to Benefit
According to estimates shared by the state government, nearly 1.50 lakh persons with disabilities are likely to benefit from the decision. Many beneficiaries had expressed concerns over delays in obtaining the UDID card, which is considered an important document for availing government welfare services.
The extension is expected to reduce pressure on applicants and administrative offices handling registrations. Authorities also indicated that efforts are being made to improve awareness and streamline the process for issuing UDID cards across the state.
Importance of the UDID Card System
The Unique Disability Identity card is part of a national initiative designed to create a single identification system for persons with disabilities. The card helps beneficiaries access welfare programs, healthcare support, and other government services through a standardized database.
