Diplomacy – Modi and Meloni Strengthen India-Italy Strategic Cooperation
Diplomacy – Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his Italy visit after a series of high-level meetings that marked a significant step forward in relations between New Delhi and Rome. The visit concluded with both nations agreeing to upgrade their ties to a Special Strategic Partnership, reflecting deeper collaboration across several critical sectors.

Leaders Focus on Expanding Bilateral Relations
During his stay in Italy, Prime Minister Modi held detailed discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on issues ranging from trade and defence to technology and global security concerns. The two leaders explored ways to strengthen cooperation in emerging industries while also enhancing people-to-people connections between the countries.
In a message shared on social media platform X, PM Modi highlighted key moments from the visit, including a light-hearted exchange where he gifted a box of Melody toffees to Prime Minister Meloni. The gesture quickly gained attention online and added a personal touch to the diplomatic engagement.
Modi also expressed gratitude to the Italian leadership and citizens for the warm reception extended during the visit. He stated that the decision to elevate ties into a Special Strategic Partnership would help accelerate joint initiatives and open new avenues for cooperation in the coming years.
Wide-Ranging Discussions on Global and Regional Issues
The Indian and Italian delegations held extensive talks covering regional developments and major international challenges. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides discussed matters related to West Asia and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, along with broader geopolitical developments affecting global stability.
Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, said the discussions reflected the growing momentum in India-Italy relations. He noted that the two governments agreed to deepen engagement in sectors including defence and security, science and innovation, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, education, cultural exchange, and space technology.
The leaders also underlined the importance of maintaining resilient supply chains and promoting stronger industrial partnerships between businesses from both countries.
Multiple Agreements Signed During the Visit
Several Memorandums of Understanding were signed during the visit to strengthen institutional cooperation in key sectors. The agreements covered areas such as critical technologies, agriculture, scientific research, education, traditional medicine, mobility, cultural cooperation, and connectivity.
Officials said these agreements are expected to support long-term collaboration and encourage greater participation from industries and research institutions in both countries.
Trade and investment remained a major focus throughout the discussions. Indian officials pointed out that the progress in negotiations related to the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement has created fresh momentum for economic ties between India and Italy.
Trade Target Set for the Coming Years
Both governments have now set a target to increase bilateral trade to 20 billion euros by 2029. The two sides also encouraged private companies to explore joint ventures and investments aimed at strengthening manufacturing networks and improving supply chain resilience.
Officials believe the growing partnership between India and Italy could play a larger role in sectors linked to advanced technology, clean energy, and industrial innovation in the future.
Italy marked the final destination of Prime Minister Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour. Before arriving in Italy, he visited the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway as part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s engagement with international partners across Europe and the Middle East.
