Diplomacy – Congress Questions PM Modi’s Silence on Israel-Lebanon Conflict

Diplomacy – The Congress party on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of not speaking out on the ongoing military developments involving Israel and Lebanon. The opposition party argued that the situation has caused significant destruction in the region and may also affect diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions across West Asia.

Congress Raises Concerns Over Regional Stability

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X to express concern about the current situation. He highlighted the importance of ongoing discussions between the United States and Iran, which are focused on reducing tensions in the region. According to Ramesh, progress in these negotiations could have far-reaching economic consequences, including improved stability in international energy markets.

He noted that a successful understanding between Washington and Tehran could eventually contribute to smoother maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. Such an outcome, he said, could also help ease pressure on international crude oil prices, a development that would be beneficial for countries such as India that rely heavily on energy imports.

Allegations Regarding Impact on US-Iran Talks

Ramesh further claimed that Israel’s military activities in Lebanon had complicated efforts to advance diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran. He alleged that continued operations and military movements in Lebanese territory had created additional obstacles for negotiations that were intended to reduce regional tensions.

The Congress leader argued that the escalating situation risked undermining broader efforts to achieve stability in West Asia, where several geopolitical issues remain interconnected. He maintained that developments on the ground could influence the pace and success of ongoing diplomatic initiatives.

References to Trump-Netanyahu Discussions

In his remarks, Ramesh also referred to reports concerning interactions between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He cited reports suggesting that Trump had expressed dissatisfaction over certain developments during recent exchanges with the Israeli leader.

According to the reports mentioned by Ramesh, Trump was said to have intervened regarding a planned Israeli military operation targeting Beirut. The reports indicated that the US president urged restraint, leading to a reconsideration of the proposed action.

The Congress leader further pointed to international media reports that described tensions during a telephone conversation between Trump and Netanyahu. While details of the discussion have not been independently verified by all parties involved, the reports have attracted attention amid ongoing developments in the region.

Criticism of India’s Position

Targeting the Prime Minister directly, Ramesh questioned India’s public stance on the issue. He argued that New Delhi had not joined countries that have openly criticised Israel’s actions in Lebanon.

In a sharp political remark, the Congress leader asked whether what he described as a “so-called fatherland” held greater importance for the Prime Minister than India itself. The comment formed part of the opposition party’s broader criticism of the government’s approach to the conflict.

Reports of Military Pullback

Separate media reports quoted President Trump as stating that he had advised Netanyahu against proceeding with a planned military operation in Beirut. Following those discussions, Israeli forces were reported to have stepped back from the proposed action.

The developments continue to draw international attention as diplomatic efforts, regional security concerns and energy market implications remain closely linked to events unfolding across West Asia.
