Diplomacy – Congress Questions Government’s West Asia Policy Amid Iran-US Peace Efforts

Diplomacy –  The Congress on Monday criticized the Narendra Modi-led government’s approach to West Asia, saying India’s long-term interests would be better served through a balanced diplomatic strategy rather than taking positions that appear heavily aligned with any one country. The remarks came as reports emerged about a possible agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

Congress Welcomes Prospective Peace Agreement

Addressing the developments, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said any initiative that helps reduce conflict in West Asia should be viewed positively. Referring to reports that Washington and Tehran may formally sign an agreement in Geneva on June 19, he noted that the full details have not yet been officially released.

According to Ramesh, there is widespread hope that all parties involved, including Israel, will respect the terms of the proposed arrangement. He expressed optimism that even if the understanding is temporary, it could become a foundation for lasting peace and stability across the region.

Economic Impact on India Remains a Concern

The Congress leader also highlighted the potential economic benefits for India if shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz returns to normal. He said unrestricted movement through the strategic waterway would ease concerns related to energy supplies and trade.

However, Ramesh argued that such relief would not automatically resolve deeper economic challenges facing the country. He maintained that several key issues affecting India’s economy existed long before the latest tensions in West Asia and continue to require attention.

Criticism of Domestic Economic Management

Expanding on the economic situation, Ramesh pointed to sustained pressure on the Indian rupee and an increasing gap between the demand and availability of US dollars. He also noted that private sector investment, which plays an important role in driving economic growth, has remained below expectations for several years.

The Congress leader further claimed that weak consumer demand has affected economic momentum. He linked this trend to stagnant real wages over the past decade and raised concerns about rising imports from China. According to him, growing imports have widened the trade deficit and created challenges for micro, small and medium enterprises, particularly those that generate employment opportunities.

Ramesh additionally alleged that uncertainty created by the functioning of tax authorities and investigative agencies has negatively influenced the broader investment environment.

Concerns Over Regional Geopolitics

On foreign policy issues, Ramesh said India must closely monitor changing regional dynamics. He argued that Pakistan has gained renewed diplomatic visibility in recent years after previously facing international isolation following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

He also pointed to the strengthening strategic relationship between Pakistan and China, describing it as an important geopolitical challenge that India’s foreign policy establishment must carefully address in the years ahead.

Debate Over India’s Position on Israel

Ramesh questioned the government’s stance toward Israel, stating that India should pursue a more balanced policy in West Asia. He said that along with humanitarian considerations and historical diplomatic commitments, national interests require maintaining constructive relations across the region.

According to the Congress leader, a balanced approach would better position India to protect its strategic, economic and diplomatic interests while engaging with all major stakeholders in West Asia.

Pakistan Announces Progress in Talks

The remarks came shortly after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran had been finalized and is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19.

In a statement shared on social media, Sharif said the understanding was achieved after extensive negotiations. He stated that both sides had agreed to end military operations and pursue diplomatic engagement. Sharif also acknowledged Qatar’s role in facilitating discussions and thanked both Washington and Tehran for choosing dialogue as the path forward.
