DefenceInfrastructure – The Delhi High Court is set to examine a petition challenging the Union Government’s direction to vacate the premises of the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club by June 5. The plea has been filed by several members of the club after authorities cited national security and defence-related requirements for reclaiming the land.
Court Agrees to Urgent Hearing
The matter was brought before Justice Avneesh Jhingan on Monday after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi requested an urgent listing on behalf of the petitioners. Following the submission, the court agreed to hear the case on Tuesday.
Club members have questioned the government’s decision and are seeking judicial intervention against the order issued earlier this month. The petition is expected to focus on the legality and urgency of the eviction directive issued to the institution.
Centre Seeks Possession of Prime Delhi Land
The Union Government has instructed the Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over possession of its premises located in Lutyens’ Delhi, one of the capital’s most prominent administrative and diplomatic zones. According to official communication, the land is required for expanding and strengthening defence infrastructure in the national capital.
The order was issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO), which functions under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Officials stated that the property falls within a strategically important and security-sensitive region of Delhi, making it necessary for broader public safety and national defence purposes.
Strategic Importance Highlighted in Official Order
Government authorities have maintained that the 27.3-acre plot occupied by the club holds critical importance because of its location near key government and defence establishments. The official notice reportedly stated that the site is needed for strengthening security arrangements and supporting essential infrastructure linked to defence operations.
The communication further underlined that the area is considered highly sensitive from a strategic standpoint. Authorities believe the land may be required for long-term public security planning and infrastructure development connected to national interests.
Historic Institution at Centre of Legal Dispute
The Delhi Gymkhana Club is among the capital’s oldest and most recognised social institutions, with a long association with senior bureaucrats, diplomats, business leaders and former officials. Located in the heart of New Delhi, the club has historically operated from government-owned land under lease arrangements.
The latest dispute has now triggered legal and administrative questions over land use, lease rights and public interest considerations. Legal experts expect the hearing to examine whether due procedure was followed before issuing the directive to vacate the premises.
