DefenceCooperation – India and Australia Deepen Strategic Military Partnership
DefenceCooperation – India and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defense cooperation, highlighting stronger military coordination and growing strategic alignment across the Indo-Pacific region. During the second defense ministers’ dialogue held in New Delhi, both nations reviewed ongoing initiatives and outlined plans to deepen collaboration across multiple areas of defence and security.

Focus on Expanding Military Coordination
The discussions reflected satisfaction with the steady progress made in bilateral military relations and the widening scope of cooperation. According to the joint statement issued after the meeting, both sides welcomed enhanced information sharing between their operational headquarters and expressed anticipation for the first Joint Staff Talks scheduled later this year.
The ministers also emphasized the significance of secure communication channels at strategic, operational, and tactical levels. They supported continued efforts to strengthen these systems through expert-level exchanges and technical cooperation.
Strong Support for Indo-Pacific Security Initiatives
A major focus of the dialogue was the increasing strategic alignment among India, Australia, Japan, and the United States in the Indo-Pacific region. The ministers reiterated their commitment to strengthening maritime domain awareness and improving interoperability among partner countries.
Both leaders strongly endorsed the Quad Indo-Pacific Maritime Surveillance Collaboration initiative. The program is expected to begin in the Indian Ocean Region and will include expert exchanges and joint tabletop exercises aimed at improving maritime security cooperation.
Maritime Awareness and Regional Monitoring
The joint statement also highlighted India’s implementation of the Indian Ocean Region component of the Quad Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness through the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region in Gurugram.
The two countries agreed to work toward developing a Common Operational Picture across the Indo-Pacific. This effort will build upon existing maritime monitoring mechanisms and enhance the ability of regional partners to share information and respond effectively to security challenges.
Joint Exercises Continue to Grow
Defence cooperation between the two nations is also expanding through military exercises. Officials welcomed the evolution of Exercise Austrahind, which this year will place greater emphasis on amphibious warfare and operations in coastal environments.
Australia appreciated India’s first participation in Operation Render Safe 2026, while India welcomed an invitation to join Australia’s submarine rescue exercise, Black Carillon. These developments reflect increasing trust and practical collaboration between the armed forces of both countries.
The ministers also acknowledged the growing engagement among their armies, navies, and air forces. They expressed optimism about India’s expanded participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre 2027. Additionally, Australia participated in India’s Exercise Milan in February 2026, while India took part in Exercise Kakadu hosted by Australia in March 2026.
Enhanced Air Force Cooperation
The two sides also discussed future participation in multinational air exercises planned for 2026. A key development will be the implementation of the bilateral arrangement on air-to-air refuelling during Exercise Pitch Black, further enhancing operational cooperation between their air forces.
Training and Professional Development
In the area of military education and training, both ministers encouraged officials to finalize arrangements for deploying an Indian visiting instructor to the Australian Defence College during 2028–2029. The initiative is expected to promote professional military education, strengthen strategic understanding, and encourage long-term institutional cooperation.
Ceremonial Events and Leaders’ Remarks
During his visit, the Australian Defence Minister received a ceremonial Guard of Honour in New Delhi. He also paid tribute at the National War Memorial, laying a wreath in remembrance of members of India’s armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
Following the meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on social media that the India-Australia defence partnership is positioned for sustained growth in the coming years. Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles also emphasized the importance of transforming strong strategic trust into practical defence outcomes.
