Defamation Case – Kerala Court Dismisses Complaint Against CPM Leader
Defamation Case – A special court in Ernakulam dealing with cases involving Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly on Thursday dismissed a criminal defamation petition filed by Congress leader and Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran against CPM state secretary M. V. Govindan.
Court Rejects Complaint Over Non-Appearance
The court decided to close the case after noting the repeated absence of the complainant during multiple hearings. During Thursday’s proceedings, Sudhakaran’s lawyer informed the court that the Congress leader had travelled to Kochi with the intention of attending the hearing but was unable to reach the courtroom before the matter was called.
Despite the explanation presented by the defence counsel, the court chose not to accept the reason for the delay and proceeded with the dismissal of the complaint.
Background of the Legal Dispute
Sudhakaran had initiated criminal defamation proceedings in July 2023, alleging that statements made by Govindan had damaged his public image. According to the complaint, the CPM leader’s remarks linked him to allegations that emerged during investigations connected to businessman Monson Mavunkal, resulting in reputational harm.
The Congress leader argued that the comments negatively affected his standing among the public and constituted a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation.
Controversy Emerged Amid Investigation Reports
The dispute traces its origins to June 2023 when a political controversy intensified following remarks made by Govindan regarding reports associated with an investigation linked to a POCSO case involving Monson Mavunkal.
At the time, Govindan reportedly stated that investigators were examining multiple aspects of the matter and suggested that Sudhakaran’s alleged role in the case would also be scrutinized. The comments quickly became a subject of political debate in the state.
Congress Leader Denied Allegations
Sudhakaran strongly rejected any connection to the allegations mentioned by the CPM leader. He maintained that the statements lacked factual basis and were made with political motives. Insisting that he had no involvement in the issues being referred to, he moved the court seeking criminal action for defamation.
The Congress veteran contended that the remarks were intended to damage his credibility and influence public perception against him.
Political Tensions Between Congress and CPM
The controversy unfolded during a period of heightened political rivalry between the Congress and the CPM in Kerala. Congress leaders maintained that the allegations were part of a politically driven campaign aimed at targeting their senior leader.
On the other hand, the CPM defended Govindan’s statements, arguing that he had merely referred to information and reports that were already available in the public domain and under discussion at the time.
