Delhi Continues to Lead Among Metropolitan Cities

The NCRB report showed that Delhi recorded 2,75,402 criminal cases during 2024, reflecting a drop of nearly 16 percent compared to the previous year. In 2023, the city had reported 3,23,549 cases, while the figure stood at 2,98,988 in 2022. Despite the decrease, Delhi remained at the top in terms of total registered cases among metropolitan regions with populations exceeding 20 lakh.

Nationally, over 58.85 lakh criminal cases were reported in 2024, with Delhi accounting for approximately 4.67 percent of the overall figure. The data highlighted the capital’s continued prominence in crime statistics due to its large population, dense urban structure, and reporting mechanisms.

Ghaziabad Also Records Slight Improvement

The NCRB data also reflected a modest decline in criminal cases in neighbouring Ghaziabad. The city registered 8,963 cases in 2024, slightly lower than the 9,227 cases reported a year earlier. In 2022, Ghaziabad had recorded 9,860 cases.

Officials and analysts often link variations in crime figures to reporting systems, urban migration, and policing methods in rapidly expanding cities around the National Capital Region.

Crimes Against Women Remain a Major Concern

While overall crime numbers declined in Delhi, several categories continued to raise concern. The capital recorded 13,396 cases related to crimes against women during 2024. Authorities also documented 5,580 incidents involving kidnapping and abduction.

Cases involving children also remained significant, with 7,662 offences reported against minors during the year. In addition, the NCRB report listed 1,833 incidents related to death by negligence, 1,090 cases of grievous hurt, and 82 cases connected to abetment of suicide. Crimes involving foreign nationals stood at 64 during the reporting period.

Murder Cases Show Marginal Rise

Delhi registered 504 murder cases in 2024, reflecting a slight increase from 503 cases reported in 2023. The city had recorded 501 murder cases in 2022. Though the rise was minimal, the data showed that homicide numbers have remained relatively steady over the last three years.

The report further revealed demographic details about murder victims. Around 50 victims were below 18 years of age, while 15 victims were above 60 years old. The highest number of victims belonged to the 30 to 45 age group, indicating that working-age adults remained the most affected segment in such cases.

Online FIR System May Influence Reporting Numbers

According to the NCRB, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have introduced citizen-friendly digital systems that allow online registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) for selected offences, including vehicle theft and related crimes.

The bureau noted that easier digital reporting may have contributed to higher case registration figures in these regions compared to some other cities. Officials explained that improved accessibility encourages citizens to report offences more frequently, which can affect direct comparisons with areas where similar online facilities are unavailable.
