CrimeNews – Police Crack Down on Notorious Kachha Baniyan Gang Members
CrimeNews – In a significant development against organised crime, the South district’s Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) has arrested six individuals linked to the infamous Kachha Baniyan gang after a brief gunfight, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs connected to a recent burglary case in Malviya Nagar.

Targeted Operation Near Jhapa Park
According to police sources, investigators had been tracking suspects involved in a house theft reported earlier this month. Acting on a tip-off, officers learned that several gang members were hiding near Jhapa Park. A team was quickly deployed to the location to intercept them.
As police moved in, the suspects allegedly attempted to escape, leading to a confrontation. Authorities stated that the operation was carefully planned based on verified intelligence, allowing officers to corner the group effectively.
Exchange of Fire During Encounter
During the confrontation, three of the accused reportedly opened fire at the police team, discharging multiple rounds. Officers returned fire in response, resulting in injuries to the suspects. Police confirmed that all three individuals sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and were immediately taken into custody for medical treatment.
The injured have been identified as Nirmal, also known as Nikhil; Amber, also called Devin; and Samrat, who goes by Samar or Kala. Officials clarified that the use of controlled force ensured that the suspects were apprehended without further escalation.
Six Arrested, Rewarded Accused Among Them
In total, six individuals associated with the gang were arrested during the operation. Police revealed that one of the accused had a bounty of ₹10,000 on his head, indicating his involvement in previous criminal activities.
Authorities also confirmed that all those arrested belong to Madhya Pradesh and are believed to be part of a larger network operating across state borders. Their movements and connections are currently under investigation.
Distinctive Modus Operandi of the Gang
The Kachha Baniyan gang has long been known for its unusual methods. Members often disguise themselves and apply oil or grease on their bodies to avoid being caught during break-ins. This tactic makes it difficult for victims or law enforcement to physically restrain them.
The group has reportedly been active since the 1990s and has built a reputation for targeting residential areas, particularly houses located near parks or in relatively isolated neighbourhoods. After committing crimes, they are known to blend into crowded public spaces such as railway stations to evade detection.
Link to Malviya Nagar Theft Case
Police officials stated that the arrests are connected to a burglary that took place on May 1, 2025, in Malviya Nagar. In that incident, three unidentified individuals allegedly broke into a residence and stole valuables. Following the complaint, a detailed investigation was launched, leading to multiple raids and eventually the recent encounter.
The breakthrough is being seen as a key step in solving the case and dismantling the gang’s operations in the region.
Ongoing Investigation Into Wider Network
Authorities are continuing to probe the broader network of the gang, including its interstate links and possible involvement in other unsolved cases. Investigators are examining whether the arrested individuals are connected to similar incidents reported in nearby areas.
Police officials have emphasized that further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses. They also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.
The operation marks a notable success for law enforcement agencies working to curb organised theft and ensure public safety in urban areas.
