Police officials on Thursday confirmed the arrest of 38-year-old Mohammad Ejaz, a resident of Bihar’s Vaishali district. According to investigators, he was taken into custody from the Karaya locality in Kolkata on May 13 after authorities tracked his movements through technical surveillance.

Body Found Inside Locked Rental Room

The matter surfaced on May 8 when police received a PCR call from a landlord in Delhi’s Laxmanpuri area under the Nabi Karim police station limits. The landlord reported a strong foul smell coming from a tenant’s room and informed officers that the tenant had not been seen for several days.

When police arrived at the location, they discovered the decomposed body of a 28-year-old woman lying on a bed inside a locked room. Officials later identified the victim as a resident of Haldwani in Uttarakhand.

Investigators said the woman had recently married Ejaz on April 26, and the couple had moved into the rented accommodation shortly after the wedding.

Family Raised Dowry Harassment Allegations

Following the recovery of the body, police registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. During questioning, the victim’s family accused Ejaz and his brother, Sarfaraz, of mentally harassing her over dowry-related demands.

According to police sources, the woman’s father told investigators that disagreements connected to money had continued even after the marriage. These allegations became a major part of the investigation as officers attempted to reconstruct the events leading to the woman’s death.

Technical Surveillance Helped Trace Accused

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh stated that investigators used sustained technical tracking methods to locate the accused in Kolkata. After gathering electronic evidence and monitoring his movement, police teams coordinated with local authorities before making the arrest.

Officials said Ejaz had allegedly left Delhi immediately after the incident in an attempt to avoid arrest. His movement across states prompted an intensive search operation by the police.

Police Claim Accused Confessed During Interrogation

During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted that a heated argument took place between him and his wife on the night of May 6 and 7. Police said the dispute was related to dowry and financial matters.

Investigators alleged that the argument turned violent, after which the woman was strangled to death. Police further stated that the accused locked the room after the incident and fled from Delhi to Kolkata.

Authorities said further investigation is underway, including examination of evidence and statements from family members and witnesses connected to the case. Police are also looking into the role of other individuals mentioned during the inquiry.
