CrimeData – Delhi Reports Slight Dip in Crimes Against Women and Children

CrimeData – Delhi witnessed a marginal decline in registered crimes against women and children in 2024, according to the latest figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau. The data showed that the national capital recorded a combined total of 21,058 such cases during the year, slightly lower than the 21,097 cases reported in 2023.

NCRB Figures Highlight Crimes Against Women

As per the official report, 13,396 cases were registered under crimes against women in Delhi during 2024. The data included 1,058 rape cases and 35 incidents involving sexual intercourse through deceitful means. Authorities also recorded six cases linked to murder with rape or gang rape.

Cases involving assault with intent to outrage the modesty of women stood at 755, while 316 incidents of sexual harassment were registered. The report further documented 279 cases related to assault or criminal force with intent to disrobe, along with 38 cases of voyeurism and 178 cases of stalking.

Domestic Violence and Kidnapping Cases Remain Significant

The NCRB data revealed that cruelty by husbands or relatives continued to account for a major share of crimes against women in the city, with 4,647 cases registered during the year. Delhi also reported 109 dowry deaths and 34 cases related to abetment to suicide involving women.

In addition, the capital recorded 3,974 cases of kidnapping and abduction of women. There were also isolated cases involving miscarriage, acid attacks, and procuration of minor girls. Officials registered 350 cases connected to insulting the modesty of women.

Crimes Against Children Show Marginal Reduction

Delhi registered 7,662 crimes against children in 2024, showing a slight reduction from 7,731 cases in 2023. In 2022, the number stood at 7,400.

Despite the small decline, Delhi reported the highest number of crimes against children among all Union Territories. Jammu and Kashmir recorded 887 such cases, while Chandigarh reported 255.

The NCRB figures included 5,404 cases of kidnapping or abduction of children. Authorities also recorded 45 murders involving children, 66 attempts to murder, seven cases of abetment of suicide, and 50 incidents related to exposure and abandonment.

The report additionally mentioned two foeticide cases and one case involving procuration of children.

National Trend Shows Rise in Child Crime Cases

Across the country, crimes against children continued to rise over the past three years. NCRB data showed that 1,87,702 cases were registered nationwide in 2024, compared to 1,77,335 in 2023 and 1,62,449 in 2022.

The increase points to growing concerns over child safety and protection mechanisms in several parts of the country.

Delhi Tops Metropolitan Cities in Senior Citizen Crime Cases

The report also highlighted crimes against senior citizens in metropolitan cities. Delhi recorded 1,267 such cases in 2024, the highest among 19 metropolitan cities included in the NCRB analysis.

Among states, Maharashtra reported the highest number of crimes against women and children at 24,171 cases. Uttar Pradesh followed with 22,222 cases, while Madhya Pradesh recorded 21,908 cases.

Juvenile Involvement Also Reported

According to the NCRB report, Delhi recorded 134 cases involving juveniles accused in crimes against women and children. The city also registered 132 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act where juveniles were allegedly involved.

The latest statistics provide an overview of the law and order situation concerning vulnerable groups in the national capital and underline the continuing challenges faced by enforcement agencies and social welfare systems.
