Crime – Fatal assault in Begumpur after dispute over mobile phone use
Crime – A young man lost his life in south Delhi’s Begumpur area after a late-night argument escalated into a deadly assault, according to police officials. The incident, which unfolded in a cluster of makeshift dwellings, has led to the arrest of the accused and raised concerns about workplace tensions among daily wage labourers.
Dispute Turns Violent Late at Night
Police said the incident occurred between Monday night and early Tuesday morning near a jhuggi settlement located opposite a mosque in Begumpur. A group of labourers had gathered after finishing their evening meal when an argument broke out between two men, identified as Shatrughan and Rakesh, also known locally as Kaily.
Witnesses present at the site initially managed to calm the situation, and the group dispersed for the night. However, the disagreement did not fully subside.
Assault Reported in Early Hours
According to the complaint filed by Ranjit Yadav, who was present at the location, he was awakened around 1 am by sudden noise. When he stepped outside, he reportedly saw Rakesh striking Shatrughan with a wooden stick, targeting his neck. The accused allegedly fled the scene immediately after the assault.
Shatrughan, who suffered severe injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts to save him, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Police Response and Investigation
Officers from the local police station reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. A forensic team was also called in to examine the area and collect evidence. Authorities confirmed that standard legal procedures were followed at the scene.
Based on the statement provided by the complainant, a case has been registered, and an investigation is underway. Police officials stated that efforts were initiated to trace the accused shortly after the incident was reported.

Investigators identified the suspect as a 25-year-old man who worked alongside the victim. Police sources indicated that the argument reportedly stemmed from a disagreement related to the use of a mobile phone, though further details are still being verified.
