Constitution – Amit Shah Highlights Judiciary’s Role in Strengthening Democracy
Constitution – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday emphasized the important role played by the Constitution and the judiciary in reinforcing democratic values across India. Speaking at a book launch event in New Delhi, Shah said the country’s democratic system has remained stable and resilient because of strong constitutional institutions and public trust in the justice system.

Remarks at Book Launch Event
The Union minister was addressing an audience during the release of two books written by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, titled The Bench, the Bar and the Bizarre and The Lawful and the Awful. The event brought together members of the legal fraternity, government representatives, and senior public figures.
During his speech, Shah reflected on India’s democratic journey since Independence in 1947. He noted that major political and legislative changes introduced by Parliament and state assemblies over the decades have largely been accepted peacefully by the public.
According to him, this acceptance demonstrates the strength and maturity of democratic traditions in the country. He added that the Constitution and courts have played a crucial role in maintaining this balance and ensuring stability.
Trust in Constitutional Institutions
Amit Shah said citizens continue to place strong faith in the Constitution whenever questions of justice or rights arise. He stated that people believe constitutional safeguards remain available to protect them in situations involving injustice or violations of rights.
He further remarked that the judiciary acts as an accessible institution where individuals can seek legal remedies. Referring to the functioning of courts, Shah said the legal system provides people with confidence that justice can be pursued through constitutional means.
The minister also highlighted how democratic systems in India have evolved over time without widespread unrest or violence, describing it as a reflection of institutional strength.
Focus on Democracy and Rule of Law
The event also focused on the relationship between the judiciary, legal professionals, and democratic governance. Shah said the combined contribution of lawmakers, judges, and legal experts has helped India preserve democratic principles while adapting to changing social and political conditions.
He stressed that the rule of law remains central to the country’s democratic structure and credited constitutional mechanisms for enabling peaceful transitions and reforms over the decades.
The books authored by Tushar Mehta explore legal experiences, courtroom observations, and issues connected to the justice system. Several dignitaries present at the launch spoke about the evolving nature of India’s legal and constitutional framework.
Democratic Stability Since Independence
Highlighting India’s post-Independence history, Shah said the nation has witnessed numerous policy shifts, legal amendments, and political changes while continuing to function within a democratic structure. He described this continuity as one of the key strengths of the Indian republic.
He also said that the acceptance of constitutional processes by citizens has contributed significantly to political stability. According to Shah, institutions such as Parliament, the judiciary, and the Constitution together form the foundation of democratic governance in India.
The minister’s remarks come amid continued discussions around constitutional values, judicial independence, and institutional accountability in the country’s public and political discourse.
